flooding 84 gs
 

need answer to relay to a non-rotary mechanic thats working on my 84 gs....
changed the starter, new batter, new plugs. mechanic says it still won't start. they took out the new plugs after trying to start it and they were "dripping with gas".
he says it acts like its out of time.

help???

is this an original motor? or rebuitl?

original as far as i know...172K miles.

in the faq page there is a de-flooding article. print it out and give it to him.

pour mmo down the carb, thats how i always got my flodded 12a to start :D

Pull the spark plugs out, pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the motor over for 5-10sec. Put the plugs and fuse back in and start it up.

it needs a rebuild or another motor. it floods constantly because your motor has low compression... this will of course will foul ur plugs ALL the time. guaranteed. a good motor w/ good compression will rarely or never flood as much.

you're still pretty lucky your motor saw past 150k mark, mine's didn't... lol

Well could be a couple of things. First Id have the mech make sure that the carb isint over flowing gas into the engine, causing the flooding (looking down the carb barrels will answer this question). Engines dont go out of time on their own. If it was running ok previously, then you are probably ok there. Second, is the car getting spark? Is the ignition system working? Third, like was mentioned, print the deflooding article. Once flooded, even after you fix it it will be a bit hard to start cause the raw gasoline washed away any oil in the chambers, causing some low compression. Oh and is the cranking speed good?


And do luck, my 1st 12A made it to 180K miles, even though I overheated it at 120k. :D

I was in this same situation a few weeks back. If I were you I would pull the plugs and rotate the engine over backwards by hand many rotations. You will be suprised how much fuel will pour out of the spark plug holes. Next put four new plugs in it and push start it with another vehicle. I spent more than a week deflooding and trying to start my car. It was a nightmare! I then used my van to push it and it sarted after about 25 feet of pushing. Good luck!

Denny(old forum member, doesn't really post anymore) had/has a GSL-SE that went past 300k miles with good compression. They CAN last long if well taken care of.

i printed the unflooding procedure from rotaryperformance.com. mechanic gave that a shot but to no avail....at least he says he did it. i'm gonna pull the car home tomorrow and do the long and short methods of that myself. i'll also pull the plugs & pump fuse to blow the fuel out of the plug holes.

mechanic says its getting spark. also mentioned replacing the carb so most likely he saw something he didn't like. as far as cranking speed, it doesn't sound right to me and the mechanic said it seems like its "got no compression". hopefully attempting the unflood will work. wish i didn't live in bfe texas. i'd take it to someone who knows what they're looking at/for.....will advise of progress, or lack thereof.

does it sound like it's just spinning? if so, you might not have compression anymore... you have heard it run right?

obviously i was too busy to attend shop in high school.....please expand on "rotating the engine over backwards by hand...". i am unsure as to how to to this.....thanks for your help!

put the car in neutral, take the plugs out, and turn the main pulley counter-clockwise (looking at car from front)
