Fixing an ACV
Hey Everyone,
Ok so my car has been in and out of the shop for a month now. It has been trying to pass emissions and just barely failing. Back fires when you step off the gas and down shift. From what I have read on the forum is that its an acv. I was wondering if anyone has ever repaired the rubbery gasket in the air control valve? I know they have stop making for my 85 12a. Just purchased a busted one and hoping to try to patch it up. Pictures are to come.... |
Backfiring on decel can be caused by several different reasons. Exhaust leak, coasting/shutter valve and/or #2 anti-afterburn valve.

Success in repairing an ACV depends on what is wrong with it.
If it's just a torn diaphragm, you can possibly patch/seal it well enough to get some more life out of it; I brought one back to life from a main diaphragm tear that way, and it held up for more than a year. If it's mechanical wear of the bypass valve plate bushing, which is another common wear point, it would take machinist's skills and lathe/milling tools to fix it. |
