It figures...

Well, motor #14 just bit the dust.

The 7th RX7, planned to be the lucky one... the daily driver with little to no mods.

Rear rotor decided to crap out this morning.. IF it actually is the original motor, it's got 216,080.4 miles on it.... not a bad life span.

I swear to god... I go through motors like strippers go through 8-balls.

YapaKanichi 02-10-05 05:35 PM

my first just bit the dust

jays83gsl 02-11-05 03:21 AM

Dude, that sucks.

CHEF_EG_1 02-11-05 12:17 PM

I need a cheap 12A as soon as humanly possible.

Jeff20B 02-11-05 02:42 PM

peejay said something about waiting until FOD to do a seal replacement, and why it's a bad idea. I'd have to agree with him.

MosesX605 02-11-05 05:25 PM

You're bad mojo man.

I outta ban you from owning or driving RX-7's altogether.

But seriously, that sucks about the motor, but hardly unexpected with more than 200k miles on the clock. Good luck finding a new one.

Jeff20B 02-11-05 10:30 PM

At least your rotor housings are probably missing lots of chrome; common on high mileage 12As with their 3mm apex seals. It really sucks to break an apex seal in a housing that would have otherwise been reusable.

NOT THE 13B 4 PORT!?!?!!?

:(

Sorry about all the bad luck you guys have been having with your motors. I hope mine hangs in there for quite some time (got over 120,000 on it right now) because I really can't afford to drive it right now; much less buy a new friggin' motor.

jays83gsl 02-12-05 02:27 AM

My theory:
We have done something to anger the ROTARY GOD!

strippers and 8-balls

do yourself a favor and check out mazspeed. they have a section you should look at before throwing that motor away, at least it can't hurt to try right ;)

ATF is garbage. Try MMO.

CHEF_EG_1 02-14-05 12:34 AM

I tried MMO... and still, the rear rotor is hissing between pulses. Instead of the puh-puh-puh like the front rotor, it's more of a psh-psshhhhh-psh-psshhhh-psh

The compression test before I got the car only showed 85 on all 3 faces of both rotors, and that was a month ago... since then, it's driven from Atlanta to Jax, been driven aggressively throughout Jax, driven to New Orleans and back, and then some more throughout Jax... then on my way to work, pow. Done.

If I could get a brand new motor, I'd be the happiest guy in the world. But... that costs money. And I need to sell the car just so I can have enough money to get back to my parents' house near Chicago... I'll get another first gen in a few months.

Directfreak 02-14-05 12:19 PM

Dude, what is it with your luck? It can't be that bad ALL the time. Or are you a fuck-up?
You remind me of Shleprock (Bad Luck) from the Flintstones.

I'm MMO'ing it as we speak, again... maybe I didn't let it sit long enough the first time. I'mma let it sit for a day or so, and then try it Wednesday...

Wish me luck!

What about the slow feeding of water down the carb with the engine running in the hopes that the seal is riding a carbon chunk and will get loosened to let the seal close? I've read about this somewhere, maybe on Felix's site.

Jeff20B 02-15-05 05:04 AM

Hey, good luck. I've got to say that I have my doubts at this point though.

I just rebuilt another R5 engine the other day that had some stuck seals and no compression. I cleaned the slots and replaced just the springs and now she breaths like a pregnant woman. The stock seals were within spec and the owner didn't feel like buying new ones. I'm ok with that.

Oh by the way, the proper spelling of drift is dorifuto (ask Jerk Racer if you don't believe me). It's weird that so many people forget the u. It must be one of those commonly misspelled words, like rx7 and Camero (also mentioned on Felix Miata's site).

Yeah, I like the first one: it was run for one full racing season, but please buy the short block at new price.
