A few teaser pics of my turbo 12a project

Hey guys! I've been working on my project on and off for several months now, and I'm nearing completion. I just wanted to show off a little, see what you guys think. The only thing left on the project is a carb hat that I'm waiting on from rotary shack, and I still need to run oil and fuel lines. Other than that, I just need to wrap everything up, and I'll be done! Anyways, enough with the talking, heres the pictures:

There you can see my turbo, it's an s4 turbo, not the best I know, but it's in great shape and I got it for cheap.

Theres a good shot of the turbo installed As you can see, there's no clearance beween the turbo and the manifold, which is something I need to work on. Also, I'm using a RB downpipe, which I think works pretty well, and isnt too close to the ground.

There you can see my intercooler mounted. I used a volvo intercooler, along with some of the intercooler plumbing from a volvo 740. I still need to mount the radiator to the intercooler brackets, and clean up the install. As you can see, someone is holding the radiator up for the picture :)

Front shot of the intercooler. Nothing flashy, but it will get the job done. Can you say sleeper?

There's another shot of the turbo on the car.

lastly, those are my turbo oil feed and drain flanges I had made up. Personally, I think theyre badass, but thats just me.

Enjoy the pictures, and let me know what you think! The project should be done in the near future, and at that time I'll give y'all all the details you want. Maybe I'll even add to the multitude of turbo 12a blow-through write-ups:)

Very nice work, looks like a good clean install.

Good luck and post some dyno sheets!

man whoever busted those welds knows what theyre doing... theyre damn perfect. if you welded the drain/feed flanges

nice work :)

Sudox_E 04-05-04 12:41 PM

Haha, I wish I had done those welds. I had a local sheet metal shop do em for me, only charged me for an hour of labor to cut the flanges and weld in the fittings. Anyways, thanks for the compliments, like I said, things should be wrapping up pretty soon, and theres a shop less than a mile from my house that has a dyno, so numbers shouldnt be too far along. Other than that, I'll post more pics and the like when I have the project completed

what kinda carb are you going with? and how did you prep it for boost?

Sudox_E 04-05-04 10:36 PM

I went with a weber 45 dcoe. From what I understand, they are pretty set as far as boost goes. I rebuilt it, cleaned everything really well, and made sure there was sealant on any threads I thought would leak boost. Other than that, I'll just have to see what happens, and how everything turns out. If any one has suggestions regarding boost-prepping a weber, I'd be glad to hear them!

some sweet finds how much have you spent i love the volvo intercooler cheap and easy to find and does the job if kept at low boost. also you cant tell wether its a condensor or radiator great im lovin it keep us posted on process im interested in seeing how it comes.

Sudox_E 04-06-04 12:18 AM

yea, I actually had a volvo parts car sitting around, so I just stole the intercooler and some one the turbo plumbing off of it. Also I'm sure it's not terribly efficient, but it's damn large. I have taken my volvo 740 up to 18psi for short periods of time with the stock turbo, without any ill effects that I could see. The amount I ahve spent on this is actually a lot. Little things seem to add up quickly. I mean, 200$ on the turbo(yea, I paid too much), ~200 on the BOV, ~600 on the exhaust, 1600 on the rebuild and streetport, 400 on the carb and manifold, 400 on the fuel system, 250 on all my fuel and oil lines, 50 on my turbo oil flanges, 200 on the carb hat, 150 on the fuel cell, 50 for the turbo manifold, 20 for the spacer i needed, 30 on intercooler mounting.... the list goes on and on. I think thats about $4000 right there. Then theres the countless other small things along the way.... you get my point. Even though I havent gone top of the shelf on things, I do believe that I have been fairly thorough with everything. I'm sure there's many was I could ahve cut corners, ecspecially with the fuel system. In the end though, I'm convinced that I will be satisfied witht he final product

RotaryRyan 04-06-04 01:16 AM

how much psi are you planning on running?

Sudox_E 04-06-04 01:22 AM

I'm thinking 10psi normally, maybe 12-14 sometimes

im waiting on a few parts before i roll out the red carpet so to say on my setup, lets just say she will be done and ready to rock for appleblossom festival at the end on the month
