a few 1st gen questions

Hi, I was wondering how long a rebuilt S3 (84-85 SE) engine would last, mileage wise, with good care? How about if it is streetported and has intake/exhaust?

Also how much would a clean (inside and out) SE with a rebuilt engine go for these days? What if it had exhaust, rims and perhaps even a few body mods?

TIA

HI there..
I couldn't tell you anything about motor reliablity.. but i can tell you that my buddy just bought an 85 GS for 1K that had 70K miles and was very clean except for some body damage.
Hope that helps

My Dads SE has over 200,xxx miles. It wasnt all that well taken care of either. My 85 GSL has 215,xxx miles and still runs.

yep these engines are known to last awhile as long as your not revving the shit out of them. not much to fail on them... no valves, valve springs, lifters, etc.

As far as the rebuild goes, it depends on the rebuilder and what was replaced when the motor was torn down. If you got new gaskets, seals and housings, there is no reason why a rebuild couldn't last as long as an original motor. If the housings on your rebuild are reused from another motor, then your mileage will vary quite significantly, depending on the condition of the housings. Porting and exhaust mods should have no detremental effects on the motor, so long as you don't rev the piss out of them with your newfound power. As far as I'm concerned, the redline is 7k rpm for a reason.

Im with what Matt says. My last SE engine was still running up to 282,000 daily driven miles before pulling it out in exchange for another used engine.
