I installed a black magic electric fan on my sa.
These fans have upper and lower mounting(s).
I fabricated brackets for the upper mounting points which attach to the
metal plate in front of the rad. A great mod and keeps the eng. much cooler

Check into flex-a-lite, I got the 180 black magic extreme. It is very nice and very powerfull. I also took it a step further and got a Ron Davis custom aluminum radiator. All this may be over kill now but not when I put in the 1993 13brew with single turbo set-up. The fan and raditor mod took some planning, custom fabrication of mounts , and little cutting of the fan around the lower radiator hose. I also installed a 100amp alternator from a 1993 rx-7. A guy named Silverotor was selling them on here set up for FB's but it took some research to figure out how to wire it up correctly. You need the alternator if you do this electric fan as it pulls 18 amps when it is running.

Just curious how difficult is it to actually wire up one of these fans to come on at a certain temperature and what is involved? Nice project you have going there modified85!

The black magic comes with a nice thermostat module and thermostat. You can see it mounted to the top of my fan. If you have a little electrical knowledge you will be fine. It comes with pretty good intructions. I like the thermostat, seems to work well. Takes a little time to dial it in but after that you are good to go. Thanks for the complment I appreciate it.

one last question, did you buy the fan/thermostat directily from flex-a-lite or another dealer? And if you don't mind me asking how much should I be expecting to pay to get a unit and all the hardware? Thanks I appreciate it!

Modified85 12-04-05 10:40 AM

I bought my fan from Summit Racing Equipment. I paid $270.00 and it came with all the hardware. The radiator was some where in the neighborhood of $550.00.

Do not by the VB fan. Thier big one is only 1200cfm and overpriced by about $50. I can buy the same fan at the local parts store, with the thermostat, for less money. That particular fan was allowing my FC to overheat this summer, I went back with the stock parts, no more overheating.

rbf41182gt 12-04-05 07:30 PM

too late, I just bought that fan from Modified85 with the adj. thermostat for $75.00

Dan_s_young 12-04-05 11:00 PM

ok I lied, one more question modified85, do you know what model that fan is? Or would it be possible for you to post a link to summit racing showing which unit you purchased from there? Thanks I really appreciate it!

part #

The model # is 180 Black Magic Extreme. As for the VB fan it may work differently in a FB, and you must supply it enough amperage. I have seen guys on here that have had good results with the VB fan. I dont think it would work well for a turbo. Also using it with a shroud would help. There is a thread on here where a guy rivited it to his existing shroud with some modification.
