Fair Market Value

I need some ammo from y'all. Take a look in your local classifieds and see what, if any are even in there, a 28,000 mile 1980 RX-7 is being listed at. Any year from '79 to '85 will work, though, obviously, I'd prefer cars in the '79 - '82 range. Disregard anything with miles over 40,000 or with ANY body damage whatsoever. It must be a perfect body, perfect interior with the low miles. Please post findings as you run into them. I've got eBay and Autotrader covered, so please don't bother with those sources. I need to see what prices these kinds of cars are moving at on the micro-level, ie., your town....thanks in advance to all that help me in this project....Mario III of So. Arlington, TX

mar3 06-24-02 01:52 PM

Hey, if you bothered to drop in and read this, at least vote on the poll. Y'all don't want to know what everyone around me here in Arlington and Dallas is saying, so I'd like to see what the forum members think, at least, to balance stuff...;)

Manntis 06-24-02 02:38 PM

I bought my '85 GSL-SE for $4,000 (Canuck Bucks) with 180,000 kms on it, though it was close to mint. Both sunroofs, no rips in interior, mechanically sound, etc. Just that weatherstripping problem and had to adjust the steering box to take out a bit of slop.

However I slid on a patch of ice driving it through the Rockies (same day I bought it!) and bashed in the front end.

The insurance co. typically will only pay up to 70% of the value of the vehicle to repair it but even though it was still driveable (tough little tyke, that fb) repairs came in @ $4,100.

Extenuating circumstances: the car had had an all new brake system put in ($1,100) and the insurance co. tacks on any major parts expenses in the past 12 months to the value of the car. In addition, the vehicle had once been Pam Anderson's daily driver. While the amount this adds to the car's value is debatable there's no doubt some collectors would pay a premium.

Result: they paid to fix it, and with 180k on the odo it was a much higher mileage vehicle than a mint 28,000 mile one.

Barwick 06-24-02 03:12 PM

I'd consider paying more than that for an '80 with those few miles.. if I had the $$

Stop.

Wait a Minute..

You're saying your car belonged to

This Pamela Anderson (formerly LEE)?

WackyRotary 06-24-02 04:31 PM

Manntis, I also agree that the value "thee Pam anderson" car would be very debatible. I would pay more for that car before the inplants and when she met Tommy Lee when she looked good on baywatch early on. Now she has stupid tattoos and Hepitious C. WHich drummer is she going out with now again?

This is exactly what I'm looking for as well. What year was it that all this happened? Thanks a bunch for what you've provided, so far, manntis! :)

Vohaul 06-24-02 04:35 PM

no drummer.. kid rock.....:)

MIKE-P-28 06-24-02 04:48 PM

theres an 84 rx-7 listed in the local thrifity nickel for $995, id say its in BAD shape... :) but theres the only one I see

Theres a 88 vert in pristine shape with 80k on it for $4995

Manntis 06-24-02 05:02 PM

Yeah, that Pam. She was Pam Sue Anderson, then Pam Anderson Lee, now just Pam Anderson. Of course, she drove it back in the day.

My collision etc. was February of this year, in Roger's Pass on the British Columbia side of Golden / Banff.

Incidentally my forst Rocket7 was a 1983 12a POS that I picked up for $900. So much was wrong with it that when it burst a coolant hose and melted the engine I just pushed it into my back yard and let it sit. It's now a parts donor for my current baby, although the interior, suspension, and all engine parts are completely different.

Anyone need '83 leather seats, metal sunroof, door liners, etc? Lemme know.

Sterling 06-24-02 05:14 PM

I check my local paper and Penny Saver here in Dutchess county Ny, and I'm lucky to see a dozen 1rsts for sale per year!

mar3 06-25-02 09:56 AM

McBump...keep the info flowing...looking for classifieds in your local paper that have a '79 -'85 RX-7 with perfect body and good interior and mileage less than 40,000. Please keep it within those parameters and include more photos of P. Anderson if they were also in the paper...;) Look at that poll....what to do....

mar3 06-25-02 04:30 PM

Sheesh...that's all? Thanks for those that gave me the $4000+ numbers...I'll be trying to set this up in a small claims court since it's under $5000. I'll post the action as it happens. I'm going to pay the fee for a jury trial so I can use the postings in this Forum to show a sympathetic jury (I hope...) how much this car meant to me. Just by looking at the poll, it almost makes me want to take the money elsewhere, though. Why pour $$$ into a worthless vehicle, hhmmmmm??

rotor-lynn 06-25-02 05:48 PM

Last year I found an 83 GS w/52K on it and it was spotless, glass sunroof and enkei's. The guy ended up getting $3200 for it. I would have bought it but I just rebuilt my engine. There are 2 79's in the local paper right now, POS most likely because one is $299 and the other is $800. Good luck

mar3 06-25-02 09:49 PM

Thanks, rotor-lynn...the prices for the POS rexs bolsters an older argument I was making about these cars never achieving super-star collectible status...little did I know it would come back to haunt me... :(

Manntis 06-26-02 01:17 AM

The xenophobia surrounding rotaries also artificially depresses the prices. I've lost count of the times I've had the following convo:

Onlooker: Sweet wheels, dude. How many cylinders?

Me: None. This thing uses twin spinning rotors instead of pistons.

Onlooker: (pause for onlooker's blank look, then...) so it's a four banger or a v8?

others are convinced you have to change engines every 90,000 kms. Then again when I was in my San Fernendo home I was asked "Canadian, huh? I've always wanted to go to Europe. What's it like living so close to France and Germany?" so perhaps I just run into more than my share of doofuses. Or is the plural doofi?

cjf 06-26-02 07:54 AM

I bought a MINT 80,000 miles gls-se for 3500.00, put another 550.00 into it and I still have to replace stuts and shocks, then it is just about perfect...It seems to me that these cars are hard to find in very good condition. But on the other hand, they are not commanding a lot of money. Why?? Import-japanese...?? The "z" cars seem to do better but they had 6 cylinders-vs-4cylinder. Wonder if that is the difference. Nothing in our local paper for 79-85 rx7's for sale. cjf

Josepi 06-26-02 08:29 AM

Someone on Ebay recently sold/or is selling a 79 with 11K miles...the buy it now price is around 12K.

Josepi 06-26-02 08:31 AM

Here's the link to that ebay:

it's 13.5K BTW...

Josepi 06-26-02 08:34 AM

'81--23K miles buy it now price of 7.2K

mar3 06-26-02 01:06 PM

Gotta love it...188 views and 18 votes...you'd think the P. Anderson would incite action, but I guess her star power is fading...:p:

nos81 06-26-02 02:11 PM

There is a 82 Mazda RX7 in the paper here with 52,000 miles on it. It say's perfect condition. They are selling it for $9,900.00. I would try take the money and spend it on Pam A. Posters and Videos then think about investing investing in the Johnson and Johnson lotion stock. Just a thought. GOOD LUCK

mar3 06-26-02 04:11 PM

Excellente!! That is exactly the good stuff I'm looking for. Although, comparing an original 28,000 mile RX-7 against one with a rebuilt engine at 28,000 miles isn't exactly apples to apples, the car was thoroughly restored with new everything in the suspension and body component dept.s and had no rust. The high prices can help establish a "fair market value" range for an RX-7 in good shape. Thanks again, nos81 !!

nos81 06-26-02 04:20 PM

Take the money and piece out the car. Sell all your parts to make up for the diff. I am thinking that at that settle price you will atleast get to keep the car. Maybe buy a new body and transplant. How stong is the motor?
Take motor and put it on an engine stand for a while and turn that motor into one bad a$$ beast.

mar3 06-27-02 01:48 PM

Bumpity....I've got an independent appraiser coming in next week to look at the carcass. If the number is what I think it will be, I'm hoping ESIS will dicker. If not, and the amount is in the $4,000 - $5,000 range, I'm going to take them to small claims court for a $5,000 shot in the ribs. I don't have to get a lawyer and it only costs $10 to file and send a notice to the crimin....er, defendant...

79+80_rx-7 06-28-02 09:49 PM

hell yeah:D

mar3 06-29-02 06:32 PM

Last bump...I just picked up a $750 beater daily driver so I can return my Parents' '85 RX-7...I'll post the pics of it tomorrow...very patriotic stuff...you'll see what I mean tomorrow....;) Vote in the poll, you bums....

79+80_rx-7 06-29-02 09:59 PM

i WOULD vote... but.... I am not.... cause of what you put...:)

i would say take the money and run..... only if you can keep your rx-7....... cause thats plenty of money to get another shell... and paint it.... and swap parts....

and NO RX-7's ARE NOT WORTH LESS!!!!!!!!! just you have to apprieciate them:D

shit... if you think you can win..... tak'em to court:D

What's a GSL-SD?

The red one looks great.

79+80_rx-7 06-30-02 05:12 PM

well... look at the rims on the white car.....

Since I'm a Pontiac guy at heart, I transplanted a 1962 Pontiac "A25 trophy" 421 cid SD V8 into their 1985 RX-7 and set it back 12" with a narrow case Powerglide to clear the trans hump. Or maybe I didn't...just having fun with all the arcane lettering...SD is Pontiac nomenclature for Super Duty...

79+80_rx-7 07-01-02 12:41 PM

oh

Directfreak 07-01-02 12:51 PM

So what is that red one?

It's an 81-83 "S" model right? The Body looks great.

Looks like a great candidate for the internals of your "totaled 80"

mar3 07-01-02 02:52 PM

I'm going to start a new thread for it since everyone is apparently tired of this particular run...it's an '84, either a GS or GSL...well probably a GS since it doesn't have sunroof...that was standard on a GSL, right? More in the next thread. I got bumped to 3 - midnight shift here at SBC (and no, the job is not customer svc of any kind, it's a an IT job with a twist concerning phone software language...no idea why they have this shift...), so it'll be a day or two before I "photo-document" the latest purchase...

79+80_rx-7 07-03-02 06:13 PM

what are you doin? i keep coming to this thread thinkin you typed somtin else..... bur you havent.. what the heck are you doin???? oh yeah.... i will vote..... better start the eni mini miny mo..... LATERS, Andrew

mar3 07-03-02 10:34 PM

somtin else...couldn't help myself, sorry, Andrew!! It's late...people voted in the poll, so it pushed it to the top...twarn't me, maihn...

Well, it wasn't me those other times, anyway!! :p:

hahaha... steal me one!!!!!!!

kotkovetz 07-04-02 11:44 PM

I bought a 1980 RX-7 here in indiana, it was on it's second engine because the first one got fried from dirt entering the intake and killing the compression, the new rotary had 10k miles and the body had 75k miles on it, no dents, near perfect interior and no rust, I bought mine for $5000.

mar3 07-05-02 07:39 PM

Thanks for the info....when was that? That $5000 is the target number and you just re-inforced my belief that is the $$ to go for...

mar3 07-14-02 08:48 PM

The independent appraiser came by and did his thing. He didn't understand why ESIS didn't try to settle right off the bat, but advised me my best path was to take the old man and the company (GM Quik Chek) to small claims court....pretty much the direction I was thinking. He said the target should be $5000...funny how it all works out the way I was thinking. Here's a pic of how the '80 is already giving up parts for other cars. Ha ha! That's the '68 CBird in the middle of it's top project still underway....nice mirror, huh?

79+80_rx-7 07-19-02 09:37 PM

back seats?

mar3 07-21-02 05:53 PM

Back seats are out while Joey, Nick and I are busy getting the power top fixed and sanding off all the rust on the convertible frame. I'm also trying to figure out a sound system for the back. It should all be back together in a month or two...the '84 is going to have to have the gas tank dropped and cleaned...take a look at this filter after 4 days of use...

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...&postid=861785

Much thanks to Jeremy for the idea on checking the gas tank situation with such a filter...

Felix Wankel 07-21-02 06:00 PM

Blasphemy! Thats not Pontiac Blue! ;)

If you get 5 grand for a 79, I'm going to take out full coverage on my car and smash it into a tree. :) My friend had to go through major stuff to get 4000 for his 10th Anniversary.

I do believe $2650 is too low, however.

AdamAnt 07-23-02 01:44 PM

I paid 5100 canadian for my 85 GS with 130,000km, it was owned by a mazda dealer in Ottawa and is in mint condition, they put lots work into it. Like suspension, brakes, hoses, rad etc.

It's perfect except that it was originally light blue and the painted it a nice silver that fades to a light blue along the bottom 9i get lots of comments). They took off all of the door hardware and did an excellent job but the first owner had sprayed asphalt undercoating in the engine compartment, when they painted they just painted over it, bastards! Anyway I've got about 80% of it off and the original paint in good condition, it will look sweet once the engine compartment is painted silver.
