riceburner, you might have a exhaust leak, when things heat up, they expand and the leak got sealed... just a guess though... I use to have a exhaust leak (you can hear it) but only when cold, you couldn't hear it after the car warms up.

watch out for leaks around the header, if that gasket is toast your car will backfire like crazy, also you can warp the **** out of your header. this happened to me and i had to get the header milled then put in a new gasket and tightened it up, no backfires since!

Check your alternator.
I had the same problem with my 1979 RX-7. One massive backfire and suddenly my original alternator died. I replaced it with a brand new one and the backfiring stopped - though not completely. On cold mornings, when the engine is not yet burning up all of the emitted exhaust gases, you can expect some RX-7 cackle in the back and maybe some loud bangs once in a while. May the local cops show you mercy.

Interesting, Markusr2001. I just rebuilt my carb (was full of rust), and the first time I started it, the alternator, or external regulator (its a 1979) have gone out. it's running rich, but your alternator replacement makes me want to get that done first. I've tried turning both the idle speed /air adjust screw, and the idle mixture screw all the way clockwise, and the engine still idles, the exhaust has a dark tint to it.
