Exhaust

Can I get a suggestion on a muffler? I dont have the money for RB, VB/BD, or anyone else. I am investing in many other areas of this project. I want to quiet the car enough to drive without sounding like a lemans car (temp setup is straight pipe to fart cannon) I want to know your thoughts on a cheapo generic muffler for a temporary presilencer. Also what would the optimum pipe diameter be? The setup that is on the car now MUST GO! I want a RB full exhaust and header, but I just dont have the money. And if I dont have the money for the exhaust I dont have the money for the sound violation this car will inevitably cause......

Please give me advice while keeping in mind a low budget, and the fact this is TEMPORARY, but I want the best bang for my buck regaurdless. I will have it on a lift either later today or tommorow afternoon, so your response is much appreciated.

I used to have raptors on my 2nd gen and they sounded good. If they still stock them, you can get them at Checker Auto. I had a stock exhaust manifold to the 2.5" presilenced race pipe from Rx7.com, custom y-pipe to two raptors and it still shot flames :) It wasn't too loud either.

I have never heard of Checker Auto, they must not be in the NE that much. I am checking EBAY and trying to find a sympethitic Rx-7 owner willing to part with a decent muffler for cheap. I dont even care if its off of an FC I can fabricate the bends to it. I just got the car not to long ago, I use a Pacesetter muffler on my 81 and I love it. Although alot of people seem not to like them. This car is stupidly loud, I wish I could leave it that way but I cant. I need to choke it back a little. I dont think Pacesetter is all that restrictive although I would like an RB product. Oh and if anyone wants to help, keep in mind one thing. I have $20 in my back pocket right now. Yeah I know it sucks... but I cant wait on this specific thing, the car has to go in for an out of state vehicle inspection in a few days. It needs to behave itself, so thanks I wish I had more to go on than just Raptor, that will confuse the local muffler shop guys I'd imagine.
Thanks,
Chris

Also..... The FC muffler, just one of them, should fit in the space an FB muffler would? Am I correct in this assumption? They look slightly narrower but maybe longer. I dont know, I found something for really cheap. Please tell me that would work!

Wish I could be more help but with a restrictive budget like that it's pretty difficult. Only thing I can tell you is to get the cheapest muffler from AutoZone or check in the junkyard and see what you can come up with

forgot to mention that Checker, Schuks, and Kragen (CSK) are one big corporation....in case you may have one of those.

FirebirdSlayer666 03-02-06 10:45 AM

^^^Never heard of any of those LOL

Advance Auto Parts is in the same group. Looks like plenty of those in the eastern part of the country.

Why don't you just head to the salvage yard and pull a stock muffler off of a first gen. You probably could get it cheap/free. I Did this on my SA when the exhaust had a rust hole in it.:)

Most junkyards around here wont pull high wear items. I have no idea as to why, I dont like dealing with them if I dont have to. Any thoughts on the FC muffler? If not I am just going to buy it, and trial and error...

Your best bet then is to go in the 2nd gen forum and see if you can get someone to measure the fc muffler. Measure the area the fb has to put a muffler and go from there.

I would say go with a Dynomax muffler...its cheap and they a huge selection for anything....and they sound great...just go to www.dynomax.com they have all of the prices and lists for what you want...thats what i run on my race car...
