Engine wiring harness question
 
I didnt search because I highly doubt that anyone has done this (or at least it is not done often). I am in process of removing all extra wiring from the engine bay area as a way to "clean it up" and give it a better look. The one thing I am stumped on is this:

What is the large brown plug for that is on the passenger side of the carb? My wiring may be a little weird. This plug has a male and female end. The male end has a green wire and the female end has a brown wire. This is strange to me as both wires go straight to the main engine harness plug. So, why did Mazda run it all the way to the other side of the engine? I think possibly it is for some option that mine does not have. Do these 2 wires need to be hooked together? I havent unplugged and tried it out yet as my car is down for the winter and also in a couple different pieces. Also, I looked around and I do not see a different place that these 2 wires could hook to. If the wires need to be hooked together, I will shorten them and simply butt connect them together. I will have some pics of the harness when I am done.

Also, for those of you who care I am completely removing the pins from the harness plug as to not accidentally cause a short or engine/electrical fire.

So, yeah its really not as complicated as I have written it but you get the idea.

Nevermind, as it is apparently not needed. Although, just to make sure I butt connected the wires together but shortened them. I also accidentally cut off a plug that I needed, so it looks like I am off to the junkyard to get another one. Maybe I wont botch this one.....

Ugh, I will keep all updated though no one seems to care.

This is something I'm interested in doing at some point.. I still have all the connectors for my rat's nest solonoids lying around despite the fact that they aren't used. Maybe I'll do what you're doing when I have everything out of the engine bay for the cleaning.

You said "Completely removing the pins"... You mean like tracing the wire back through the loom or what?

Damn.. I was watching "Trucks" the other day and the guy on the show just went out and *bought* an aftermarket wiring harness... Wish I could do that! I guess some day I'll have to make one.

In the FSM, it explains how to remove the pins from the harness plugs (for replacement obviously). I cant remember what chapter, 15 maybe. I CAN tell you this much though. It will be considerably less wire when all said and done. I am only removing the male plug pins and not removing any of the female ones so it COULD return to stock if need be (very doubtful). Once I buy a new harness I will take a couple decent before, during, and after pics. I need to borrow the digi cam from my mom again. By simply not having the rats nest plugs/wires it would make for a lot cleaner looking setup. I have removed ALL extra misc crap, so I am sure mine will be a "bare minimum" setup. Only the water temp, oil press, the rest of the wires that hook to stuff near where the oil press hookup is (4 or 5 wires) and 1 carb plug will remain. So, roughly 7 or 8 wires out of ~25.

When I did my rats nest removal, with the mikuni, I sat down witth the FSM in hand and removed everything no longer needed, at the pins. Ended up with 3 wires, plus the 2 errant ones mentioned in the first post.

if you goto aftermarket gauges, even those are not needed.

my chassis is abit older (75), so I don't trust many of the wires anyway
