Engine mods with emission testing
 

Hey Folks

Been into these things for years now and just finding this site..dah.

Got a dilema.. Want to do some engine mods to increase HP but my county in Wisconsin requires yearly emission testing. Was wanting to go with RB/Holley carb/intake setup but that would require removing alot of emission stuff. So, I think I am going to rebuild the stock carb and possibly put RB exhaust on and when it goes in for test put the primary cat on in place of the presilencer cause they do check under the car with a mirror to see if the cat has been removed. Anyone think this is possible and whats the procedure for removing the TR and putting header on?

Any help would be cool.

what you can do is remove the stock parts on the exaust side only and keep all the emmisions things that you remove and replace them when you go do your test. you can look up previous write ups on HOW TO REMOVE RATS NEST and when test time comes do reverse operation. otherwise the only thing that i can tell you is leave the state.

A Turbo II is what I've been considering, as they are 182-200hp in stock configuration (and new condition).

I can't speak in absolutes, given that I'm not very knowledgeable, but you can install a K&N filter, Racing Beat-style air cleaner, and a more free-flowing muffler and catalytic converter. Most high-flow cats I've seen on the web are quick to point to disclaimers regarding their ability to pass emissions, so that would be a risk to consider.

How often do you have to have the car tested?

Is there any Grandfauther clause or any thing?

Here in Ontario Canada, once a car is 20 years old it is emissions testing exempt, what they do is test cars that are 3-19 years old...

The testing here is done every two years so a lot of guys just swap the old OE exhaust system back in to pass the test then change it back for another two years...

It is about the easyest and most shure fire way to pass the test.

There are also high flow Cats that are suposed to pass but I don't know anything about those...
