engine bay cleaning tips

hello all, while i am waiting for my motor rebuild, do any of you have any good tips for cleaning all the years of gunk and grime from the engine bay?

djessence 12-13-07 01:23 AM

heavy duty degreaser. Hard srubbing, brake clean (make sure not to get on rubber or plastic) for the really stubborn bits

Rip everything out

Remove the most stubborn shit by hand

Soak enginebay in petroleum for 15min.

Hose off

Now would be the time to paint that enginebay.

Yeah, heavy duty cleaners like engine cleaner, use a brush. Finish polishing it up with McGuire's cleaner wax to make it all look like new...

Turtlewax bug off works great. Dropped a little on my zbart coating and it took it right off:doh: .

Toothbrush, engine degreaser, a lot of rags, a lot of elbow grease and go to town!

The best degreaser in the WORLD - PURPLE POWER. Get you some of that and use that and a water hose, the grease runs off like water. Safe on paint also as long as you dont leave it on there for hours.

Simple Green
Shop Towels
Soft Bristle Brushes
Pressure Washer
Patience

thanks, i'll give it a try.. i like the idea of little work needed to clean it.. but if needed i will do it .

mikewoodkozar 12-14-07 07:03 PM

yeah, if you have access to a power washer, try that, especially if the engine is out

Mike - That is one clean, detailed engine bay. :icon_tup:

How long did it take you to clean all of THAT?

mikewoodkozar 12-14-07 07:53 PM

^ Dont know, i have been without a job for so long now...

The RX7 took leaps and bounds in the right direction this summer because of all my free time.

mikewoodkozar 12-14-07 07:54 PM

And i if i could only keep that darn RB header from rusting

Still very nice, yeah I did notice the rust. What kind of drop is your car riding on?

And, I know there have been quite a few threads regarding engine bay cleaning. I've used both Purple Power and Simple Green, both work extremely well.
