electrical help needed

ok, so I am installing an alarm into my car, (for the convienience of power locks) and as I am testing some of the wires that I *think* I need to track down I am finding that though the voltage does change in response to what I am doing/trying to find in some cases it goes from like 0 volts to only .13 or so. am I doing something wrong? or is this normal? sorry, this is my first time using a multimeter and this seems wrong to me if a car runs off 12 volts

tia,

hmm, perhaps its on the wrong scale setting? maybe it is 13 volts... otherwise it could be a wrong wire. try the multimeter across the battery terminals to determine whether the setting is correct or not.

When I installed my alarm, I ran new wires direct from the battery with inline fuses, this way you can guarantee its hooked up right lol.

nonono, while trying to find the trunk release I was checking the wrong wire, but even so when i triggered my trunk I got .13 volts on another wire, nothing when not triggering the trunk release. ran 2 wires for power from the battery, one for the brain, and another that will be used for the locks and trunk release and dome light releays
