electric fan mounting

Who has their electric fan in front on the radiator and who has it behind? I'm debating on where to put my fan, and also whether to keep the fan shroud or not. Let's hear how you did it.

I've got the Black Magic fan, mounted on the stock side of the rad (it's a puller so you have to do it this way). It comes with its own shroud so I ditched the stock one. Keep in mind that if you have a 79-82 with the air-oil cooler, the rad is too small to mount a 16incher solely on its surface area. I solved this problem by modifying the edge of the shroud slightly so it fits over both the rad and the oil cooler. It works real nice, pulls a lot of air and I've never had a problem with it other than the thermostat setting being a little finnicky.

I'm kind of curious about this myself...Mine is mounted behind the radiator, but I didnt put it there. Also, I still have the fan shroud, but I think I'm gonna take it off unless someone has a good reason not to. The guy before me just took out the radiator because he planned on rebuilding the engine, installed the fan, and sold the car to me. So when I got it, the stock fan was even still on it (no radiator installed). So I honeslty dont know if the shroud should come off or not. Also, I dont know whether the fan is a push or a pulling fan, Im gonna find out this weekend though...

Well, that answers my questions...Mines a Black Magic as well, so now I know it's a puller, and im gonna ditch the stock shroud (weight reduction :)). Thanks for answering MY qestions at least :).

i had my blackmagic hooked up to the stock rad. mounts but when i got my 1" core alm rad. i made hangers to hang the fan from the rad. its VERY nice looking and when you polish its SWEET and hold the fan to the rad. like a ratchet.

No problem:cool:

We all love that blackmagic, but im not gonna spend $200 on a fan.

Anybody got an electric fan mounted in front of the radiator?

Im not either :D. Mine came with the car, and I didnt even pay as much as the fan is worth for the car and it only has 80K miles and its in REALLY good condition, except for that darn engine thing :(...

I mounted two 10 inch Davies-Craig fans in front of the radiator. I've heard it prolongs the life of the fan since you don't have hot air blowing over the fan motors and it also gives a very clean look to the engine bay. :D

bump

more people need to respond to this thread, I'm going out there to do it in 15 minutes and still havent decided.

Isn't the fan either a pusher or a puller? How could you just mount it either way? I think you have to mount it how it's designed to work.

Besides, if it works for you then it works. It'll either cool adequately or it won't. Do it how you think it should be done, and then if it isn't cooling properly you'll have to reconsider.

I'm just looking for opinions, trying to avoid mistakes, and my fan is reversible so it can go either way.

SilverRocket 03-21-02 05:58 PM

Cool, sorry man. I'm just remembering when I installed mine it was very clearly marked only to use it one way.

I think it would definitely be some sweet ass shizz if you could mount it in front of the rad, as long as it works ok.

You can reverse the fan motor by switching the wires.

That's right. And on some fans you need to flip the blade around as well due to the shape of the blade.
