Electric fan dyno info
 

I know that a couple people here have done the upgrade to electric fans, and from what I gather, the Black Magic one is the best. Well in the latest issue of Car Craft mag ( great mag ) they dyno test one. They take a stock 90 ( I think ) fi 5.0 and dyno it at the rear wheels, then take off the old fan and install the Black Magic, then throw it back on the dyno. They gained 7hp and 9lbs at the rear wheels! And the average gain accross the rpm band was like 5.5hp. The stock fan setup on the 5.0 was exactly the same as my gsl-se. I am defenatly including this upgrade when I rebuild. Question: Has anyone who has done this had a problem with the electric system? I should probably upgrade to an optima battery at least. I was planning to run underdrive pullies, but I'm not sure now.:cool:

I upgraded to the Black Magic electric fan for my 7. It was easy to install and didn't see or notice any problems with the electrical system.
I think it's a great cheap upgrade that you can feel right away. I do however recommend getting the temp controlled unit that you can buy seperate. That way you don't have it runnig on a switch and forget to turn it off and drain your battery. :)

The only real challenge I had was when removing the fan from the waterpump pully, then reinstall you need shorter bolts, no biggy, other than that, and excellent mod. make sure you wire it good (or you motor may overheat) and like error said, get the temp controlled one :)

I've installed a black magic in my car this summer and I love it! I never knew my old clutch fan was seized and it made a huge difference with throtle response. I've had no problem with the stock electical.

I went to the junk yard and got myself a fan out of a V6 Oldsmobile Cutlass or something for $10. Paid $5 for the wire and toggle (mounted next to the non existent choke) Left the fan on the first day and killed the battery....can you say DOH. I sat @ idle for 20 minutes on the freeway recently and had 0 problems with it overheating. In fact I think it was actually running cooler then with the clutch fan. If you really want to spend $200 for the Black Magic and Temperture control go for it but it can be rigged up for cheaper.
