EFI'd Cartech blow through turbo kit (need some info)
So I recently picked up this engine that I was first told was just a turbo 13b. After looking into it more I discovered it's a Cartech turbo kit and assumed it was a carb blow though based on searches I've done. The day comes to pick it up and as I start disassembling it it appears that it was at some point converted to EFI. I guess I'm just looking for an explanation on what has been added and or removed from the original setup and if I'm missing anything that would normally come on this setup. The fuel rail has no branding on it whatsoever. The pick of it assembled is essentially everything that it came with. Also I believe this is a GSLSE block but it is a 4 port? Hybrid block maybe? Thanks for any help or info.

i see GSL-SE rotor housings, GSL-SE center (probably), and 12A end irons. it makes an old school 4 port engine EFI. it looks ported water pump has a 12A thermostat cover instead of the 13B, and the fan drive stuff looks like 81-83 style to me. there is a GM temp sender in the back its using an old Racing Beat oil pressure and temp gauge adaptor for the turbo oil feed (or maybe the turbo is getting oil for the stock location, the stock sender is in the RB part). oil filter is sitting on a 79-81 pedestal flywheel is aftermarket, clutch is probably an ACT. if it is an ACT, that one is the Extreme, and it does hold more power than you're making, but pedal effort is really high too. i like the other ACT pressure plate, it will hold the power you're making, but pedal effort is normal. i've pulled a couple of these Extreme pressure plates out, they just suck in a street car. the intake and turbo stuff is cartech/turbonetics. its super ancient, but they are around and can fix it if needed. throttle body is probably a TWM, i'm just saying that because thats the only one thats old enough to match the rest of the setup. injectors look like FC 550's and GSL-SE 680's, enough for 250 flywheel or so, assuming the fuel pump keeps up. i think i would find a stock fuel rail and run primary injectors in the primary location, you would gain response and efficiency. i'd then run 4x550 in the throttle body, you'd have TONS of fuel you should skip putting this in an Rx7, and roll up to Radwood with this powering your couch, it would be; rad |
Thank you so much for that info. That helps out a ton. Yes I agree it looks ported. Also the inlets feel enlarged as well when checking with my finger. I’m not going to take it apart. It was running when pulled from a wide body fb. Claimed to make 250ish. There actually is a stock rail with injectors. So those would be my primaries? I was actually going to ask if I could delete and block off that portion of the fuel rail for simplicity sake but it sounds like it would be better to keep it? That would keep it at 6 injectors total. Any way of telling which injectors I have for sure? I’ll get more pictures. My original goal with this car was to just do a street port and toss a 48ida on and call it done but since picking up this engine I think I might as well do it right. I think as far as major modifications to the system so far I’m going to ditch the distributor and go with a crank trigger kit. Electric water pump, and pump to run the water to air intercooler. LS coils. E-fan. I beleive ill either need to modify or replace my tank with a gsl-se tank? Also need to clean up and identify the harnesses and wiring that came with the kit. I’ll post more pics. |
might be easier to run and under car surge tank with efi pump and keep your existing tank?
That is a pretty cool setup and having primaries and then 4 sec injectors well away from the ports is probably the best combination for driveability and power. |

you should confirm the part numbers, but the orange ones are probably GSL-SE and the red ones are probably S5 Turbo.
run the turbos are primaries, and the gsl-se's are secondaries, more than enough fuel. |

I would like to run a Haltech Elite 550 which says it has support for 4-8cyl / 2rotor, (from the manufacturer website) "The Elite 550 is ideal for basic 4 to 8 cylinder or 1-2 rotor engine applications. This robust, competitively priced ECU features an environmentally sealed, waterproof case, 4 fuel and ignition channels and a 3 BAR internal MAP sensor. - 4 x Fuel Injection Outputs (Peak And Hold (0-8A Peak / 0-2A Hold)" but I'm wondering how this would work given I would have 6 injectors. Is it correct to assume I could run each primary on it's own channel and then all or 2 of the secondaries each on their own channel with 2 or more injectors? |

Damn that is a cool set up! Not really comparable to todays set ups for power and efficiency . But way cooler!

I really like the added fuel injection touch. Should make for better refinement and consistency. You have struck rotary gold, my friend. I can't remember being a huge fan of them back then, but through the prism of what I hope is my wisdom, today, I surely appreciate them now. I can't wait to see what you do with it. |
