Effects of Canadian Climate

Ok im new...im young..im an engineering student..and i've been obsessed with the rx-7 since Gran Tourismo 2. Anyway, for all of you canadian 2nd gen owners out there..i wanna know how rough the climate's been on your NA or Turbo II. Im doing a little "market research" cuz i've been itching to own a rex since..well..gran tourismo 2. :D
Obviously winter sucks..but i just want to know how all of you cope with the 7's little "quirks" with the nasty environment we got here.

Ultimately i want an fd...but god only knows im not ready for something like that. Might as well learn on an fc first right?
(Flame all you want..at least include some interesting information so i can learn something new)
~Peace

:D

oh well... this kinda applies to all rotarys... They all have problems with cold weather. :D Well, at least you didn't go bashing the "ugly" model of the RX-7, the ones that no one wants to talk about...

personally, i think the Fb is nicer than the Fc. But the Fd kills all. I hate it when 2nd gen;s are rated better... unless they are a T2, they are slower than a Fb (SE)

Vohaul 06-22-02 01:30 PM

personnaly, i think Fc's look too much likje a dodge laser or chrysler daytona...along those lines..done get me wrong.i still thinks they are a nice lookin car....i just think the FB is in a class all by itself for looks

hotty 06-22-02 01:36 PM

ya exactly, i always mistake the two...

7Obsessed 06-23-02 09:30 PM

Well I can't help but respect all rx-7's, 1st gen or otherwise. 2nd Gen's are cool too, and im interested in one mainly only to learn how to take care of a 7. I heard how 2nd gens are usually the best to learn off of. My favorite is the third tho. Nice clean lines and a pure sports car mentality. I know all rx-7's need a lot of attention, but the 3rd gen will make you pay if you dont love it.
Anyway....how crappy is gas mileage during winter? Well..if any of you drive your first gens during winter that is. Theres barely anyone driving those cars during summer let alone winter.

SilverRocket 06-23-02 10:07 PM

Don't drive your FB in the winter, it's just asking for trouble. Just get some pos beater and store that 7 away like it's supposed to be.

Manntis 06-24-02 02:25 AM

...and be sure to top up the rad with antifreeze when storing - not only to keep coolant from freezing and thereby cracking expensive stuff, but also for extra rust inhibitors as the car sits... and sits... and sits... because unless you live on the West Coast, Canuckian winters can be rather long.

Oh, and unless it's stored in a heated garage a battery blanket and block heater are a must to keep the electrolyte from freezing.

(note to SoCal residents - although you think Canada is full of electric cars, those extension cords sticking out from under Canadian hoods are in fact part of winter heeting equipment)

SilverRocket 06-24-02 02:47 AM

It's best to take the battery out entirely. Also, if you have a stock carb, the best trick in the book is to pour a little oil down the primaries when starting up after a long bout of storage. The engine will start right up on the first few cranks, very nice.
