Easiest way to get an engine out
 

I've disconnected everything from the engine, drained the oil, coolant etc., and taking the radiator out to have more maneuvering room. I pose this question, what is the easiest way to actually get the fucker out of the engine bay? I was thinking of renting an engine crane from Hertz or something. Anyone have any better ideas?

I am actually getting ready to pull mine also. I plan on using my engine hoist I think that would be the easiest way.

yup, engine hoist, unless you have some rafters. then just loop it over and hook it to a wratchet strap, lift it up push car backwards..lol

I use the crane, but for me, that's only 1/2 of it. Since I pull/install engines with the tranny attached I also have an engine tilt. Makes a world of difference.

I use my engine hoist and only pull out the engine, not the tranny. It's easier that way for me.

i just pulled engine out of the 80 with my friends cherry picker and i found the best way is to undo the trans mount bolt and just pull it all out at once. way easier. although its a little trickier to get all back in but its been done!! good luck

I saw this and remembered how I did it lol. Basically unbolted the motor mounts, and fuel line. Un bolted the tranny. Unplugged, drained everything, and since I wasnt using much else just starting cutting stuff that caught with a saw blade hahaha. I think that was several hoses, but good riddance! I was suprised how easy. And I would have never guessed about the 2 guys lifting it out with a pole!

i do the same thing. Having a load leveler between the engine and hoist makes it SO much easier to come out without hitting anything when the tranny is attached.

Get a buddy of similar size to you. tie a rope to the lifting tabs. make sure everything is disconnected, use a 4x4 or 2 2x4's on edge, and lift it out. My room mate and I did this, and it was pretty easy. The only difficult part for us was the height difference (why I said of similar size). I'm 6'5" tall and my room mate is 5'8" tall. That 9" of difference made my back hurt, but we got it out pretty easily.

Okay, cool. I think I'm going to go with the engine hoist, so I'll go out today and get one. I'll post when I finish.

I lifted the engine and trans together out the top with a cherry picker, i had to pull down on the tailshaft to get it all to clear while it was coming out but it wasn't all that bad.

I pulled my motor out not to far back with my cousin using a Strong chain and wooden fence post. secured the chain to the motor atching it to the header bolts and and a bolt on the opisite side of the motor http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4554/40dscn0625.jpg. we made sure the chain was as short as posible so the motor wouldnt hang low slid the fence post through the chain and removed the motor from the tranny and motor mounts and it lifted out we also had to let air out the tires (were short) so we would clear the car.

I've pulled a fair bit of engines on a number of different cars. I find the best way it it jack up the front of the car, disconnect everything. Get the shop crane out (a must have if your planing on pulling anything out quickly) use a shit-tone of yellow rope (i find chain scratches the block and is bore likely to break something) and wrap it up, undo the engine mounts and then the transmission mounts (in that order, transmission weight can make the engine mounts hard to take off, the engine is supported by the crane so the effect does not occur for the trany mounts). Jack the crane up and away. Done. My friends and I can take an engine out of a civic faster than you can say rice rocket. We used one for snow cross and puled the engine 3 or 4 times in a mater of months.

Just turn the car upside down and shake it :hahaha:

Best answer: Loop rope over tree branch, attach end to engine, attach other end to truck. Drive truck. :)

All has been stated as to the easiest way to remove which is with the proper piece of equipment which is the engine hoist or cherry picker as it is referred to.

If you are in a pinch and cannot get access to a engine hoist or are near a tree then you can do what I have had to do at times.

Remove the transmission from the car, support the engine with a jack using a 2x4 or other suitable support and drop the engine out the bottom. Make sure that you have the car raised high enough so that you can pull the engine out from underneath the car. Again only if you don't have access to a engine puller or otherwise and need to get the engine out would you do this. You could put it back in doing this but it would be a pain to do. :-)

ya deffinately get an engine crane we have a dragster and its the only wat to do it with out tons of headaches.

Since members are tossing out other ideas, and some days I'm brain dead, I've pulled/installed the engine in/out of my old El Ranchero useing a come-along chained to the rafters. When I built the shop. I installed a steel I-beam, which has an antique chain hoist hanging from it. Ever since installing that, the engine crane stays in the other garage. It also come in handy for dragging cars up the ramp into the shop.

Easiest way,,,, pay someone else to do it,,,, but since most of us just don't want to pay for that I'd say the hoist or rafters are equally viable options. Although we have lifted one or two out in my day. Much more of a pain

I guess I could always cut out the cross member and have the engine just drop out the bottom. hahaha.

what about jacking up the front end and dropping it down....I've never pulled an engine out of my 7 but we dropped an engine out of a prelude like that it worked pretty well in and out all we needed was a floor jack.

much more work in the end than it's worth. You have to remove suspension components, steering components, swaybar, subframe, etc. to get a motor out through the bottom on the 7. Just man up and lift it out with a buddy. If you're a real masochist, unbolt everything from the engine (trans included, get that out first), and bear hug the bastard out of the engine bay. It only weighs 220 pounds (12a) for the short block...

yeah I wasn't sure I haven't had my 7 long and I have no need to take my engine out at the moment so I haven't been paying much attention to that but it's an interesting topic.

I already covered this and no you don't have to anything of what you stated here.:)
