Dumb Carb Question!
 

Ok-- I am really going to show how lost I am with these cars... :rlaugh: How do you adjust the idle on one of these critters... I am idleing at about 4K RPM...And while a racecar does idle high...not that high! Anyway... Thanks in advance! :bigthumb:

Well, you left out one sorta important detail, the year model. I am assuming it is NOT an SE, as you asked about carbs.
On early models, the idle speed screw is on the engine side of the carb, just above the mixture screw, in the center of the carb. It's the bigger one. Later models have the idle speed screw well hidden, still on the engine side, but under the accelerator pump linkage. Towards the firewall.

Well- The car is carburated! However with it being a racecar... Lord only knows what year the carb is! I have played with the "big" screw on the engine side- and it doesn't seem to change the idle... So where is the other one hiding?

Like Wullf said, it's really hidden; under the linkage on the right side (facing it from the driver's side fender).

The mixture adjustments aren't effecting anything because you're not actually using the idle circuit. @ $K RPMs, you're using the main circuit.
I would check your throttle cable slack first, and then any other linkage fror binding/hitting where it shouldn't.
Unless your engine is ported, it shouldn't have a high idle, and even so, no port would ever require that kind of idle!

Unplug the vacuuum hose from the A/C compensator if you still have it and see if that helps. Mine was idling at 2500 because of that bugger.

Does it have 2 screws in the center, towards the bottom, on the engine side? If so, that would be 1980 and older style. In which case, the upper (if I recall correctly) *should* be the idle speed adjustment. As for the later style, it should be located towards the firewall, under the accelerator pump linkage, close to where the throttle cable attaches.
If turning this screw has no effect on the idle speed, look for binding linkage or throttle cable, as something has to be holding the idle up that high. It could be from the choke linkage (which is normally disabled on a racecar), OMP linkage, or any other area or the carb.
