Does fiberglass exhaust wrap work?
 

Do those wraparound tapes to reduce heat of exhaust headers work? I'm wondering if I should put in an RB header when I put the Sterling on one of my 12As. I've heard stories of headers glowing red and overheating the engine compartment.

Funny you mention this man. I was just thinking the same exact thing. I am sure that the wrapping does cut down on some of the heat given off by the headers. Does anyone have experience w/ this?? Good bad?? Worth it??

I use it works great. It drastically reduced underhood temperatures and it helps prevent you from getting burned when you're working around them.

From what I've seen and **heard** from others is that it expidits the rusting of your headers.

If your header does not have a rust resistant coating and is bare metal, then it will trap moisture and that's bad.

Racing Beat headers have the chrome type finish which will not rust.

And any other header, I would suggest you use some sort of engine paint or a rust prevetative.

I plan on using an exhaust wrap for my headers. After riding in Peejay's car my shoes almost melted, hahahah.

The rust is really only a problem on a really cheap header (like pacesetter) that has thinner metal. Rb uses such heavy duty metal so I highly doubt that would be a problem unless you drive your car underwater.

Wraping the headers works very well to keep the engine bay cooler. Highly recomended.

There isn't a paint made that will hold up to the heat of a header. Ceramic coating will, best to have the inside and out side done, then there is no need for the wrap.

It WILL keep the engine bay cooler. It WILL keep the heat in the exhuast keeping exergy in the exhuaust adn giving you 1-2 hp.
It WILL expidite the appearance of rust and wear on the header. There are benifits at a cost that they will wear the header fast, but if you get it ceramic coated inside and out then you can wrap it and get benifits without the negitives.

You mean a high heat engine enamel with ceramic coating? Der Uber engine paint? How would that hold heat in?

POR-15 is only good up to 115F in liquid form, so when its a solid I doubt it would be any use either in preventing rust.

Where would you go to get it coated on the inside? I have never heard of that before.

The por-15 header coating stuff is supposedly good up to 1500 degrees or something like that and it will prevent and encapsulate any rust.

I just got off the phone with Keith from POR-15. POR-15 is only good up to 150F in liquid form and 600F when dry and solid. That isn't nearly enough I think.

Also he reccomended the POR-15 brand engine paint, but that is not a rust preventative. Also the header would have to be sandblasted in order to apply that stuff.

You guys make it sound like wraping the headers is going to make the freaking thing rust out faster than if itwasnt wrapped. I have an 83 gsl w/RB headers wrapped 5 yrs ago and I decided to re-wrap it beacuse the wrap got old and raggidy looking. After unwrapping the original stuff the header was like new! NO RUST AT ALL!! So its re-wrapped and ready for another 5 yrs! :bigthumb:

edit: i jus realized this stuff is por-20 not por-15 but it still seems like it would work well.

That stuff is only engine paint, its not an actual rust preventative. I askdd Keith from POR-15 about it over the phone earlier today.

The RB headers are pretty much immune to moisture from what I've seen. I'm not sure about my headers though. Its just heavy ass steel from Rotary Engineering. You can never be too careful with an investment!

I see what you mean now. Maybe you could coat the exhaust wrap in por-15 with the por-20 under the wrap.

The exhaust wrap is a type of textile.

Textiles don't rust. Why would the POR-15 need to be on there?

Applying POR-15/20 to the headers will give you a smoking good time.
