DLIDFIS ?'s

Ok, first I printed out and read a shitpot of info on this setup. I just want some people that have used the system for awhile to answer a couple questions. First off when going to DLIDFIS, do you still connect the condensor on the dizzy? Second, do you still run the tach off the neg. on the trailing coil? (some postings indicate tach issues, just want to wire all correct to start. Third, I'm switching to a 2nd gen. fuse block so I'd like to run the ignition through a fuse there what size fuse is recommended and I place my relay before the fuse correct? Lastly please look at the cheezy "paint" diagram below and tell me if there is any reason i should not build an ignition box like this. Is this going to be enough room to cool igniters? the peices the igniters are mounted on will be 1/8" aluminum flat bar. I'll be putting grommets in the ends to run my wiring through and an aluminum top. All mounted to the strut tower area and box will be grounded.
Thanks

No
It doesnt matter if its trailing or leading (-) terminal for tach.
Yes
Havent tried that but dont be afraid to try it.

Yes, connect the condensor.

I think you'll need a fan. These HEI ignitors get hot.

Siraniko 12-16-09 07:42 PM

no need for a condenser. these cars will run without them

Do you think if I drilled venting holes and mounted a small fan like an amp or CPU fan, that would cool enough? What kind of heat are we talkin? hot enough to melt my wiring? Or just hot enough to comprimise the igniters? I just want the system enclosed and clean looking. No offense, but most all the setups I've seen have the same issue, they all LOOK like they are done by the owner. I want the benefits of the system and the clean look of stock or aftermarket. I'm willing to do the work, just lack first hand knowledge of the system. If I can get a user friendly design going that looks good, (especially if it's easy on the wallet) than maybe alot of members can benefit. One other idea, I'm relocating the battery, what if I slotted two ends and ran a small duct to feed air from the nose. (in my battery bay) could that provide enough cooling? Ideas are welcome, I think you all get the gist of what I'm trying to do.

DLIDFIS setup

Here is a picture of mine. I have a CPU fan that I will be installing in the near future. The vent from the front will help as well.

I like the way DLIDFIS looks as far as the home made. Looks like old school racing too me. but If you want it to look stock you could use 2GCDFIS. It looks basically like its supose to be there. wouldn't set off any bells in anyone who doesn't know rotarys. The main question I have is why is there extra spots on the dizzy.

What extra spots are you refering to? my diagram has no dizzy. As to the "old school" look. i have no problem with that if that's my only option. But I'd prefer to keep my engine bay as free of visual wiring etc. as possible. i considered 2GCDFIS too, but decided to go this route and i'm already invested in 3 high output coils, 3 HEI performance ignition modules, "Weathertight" electrical connections and a set of spiral wound custom fit plug wires. So i'm commited to this, just don't see a reason I can't have the system a make it clean looking too.

The first thing on your mind should be keeping the ignitors cool. Everything else is secondary.

Keeping cool

Agreed! But open/exposed is not the only or even the best way to cool something. Wouldn't an "airbox" of sorts be a more efficient way of cooling? do you think using a "pulling" fan, sucking fresh air from the grille area across the igniters would be better, or using a push fan with venting holes to intake air? Perhaps a CPU style heatsink on the rear of the ignitors as well?

I'd do a wind tunnel effect with cpu fan, or duel fans facing down to keep ignitors cool then. Should look real good and funtion really well also. Yeah. I think with the high output coils you may be a bit better than 2gcdfis.

I just figure there has to be a more efficient way to cool them than just mounting them on a plate. It also seems it would be beneficial to have them enclosed somehow, which would also open up more mounting options as well as elimante the exposed wiring.

Hey, hoone know's this OldSchoolMel guy... Only listen to what WackyRacer tells you! LOL! Thread Jack.. I'm a drunk a$$!

ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL, me too. been under the influence all day LOLLLLLLLLLL

Ok, so I scrapped my original design. But I found a few old AMD heatsinks at the computer store, so I pulled the 5v fans off em, rivetted them together with some aluminum flat bar, got a 12v fan just for kicks, and I'm going to mount it all inside an ABS project box. I can't see how this can't be cool enough for the modules.

The heatsinks were only 5 bucks a piece!

Which parts are you in need of?
