Disk brakes?
 

Ok so my question today is I have a 79 rx7.. Can I change the rear drums to disk breaks? If so what can I use?

FYI, the drum and disc brakes take different axle housings. In all honesty, the rear drum brakes aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. The drums work better as an e-brake than the discs do. If you want to go with an LSD differential, those will fit in either axle housing. You will need a small axle diff though, 83 or older. That upgrade is simpler due to the differences in the brake line thread pitch that changed in 81.

My biggest issues with the drum brakes are these:

1. installing shoes is a PITA
2. changing pads is very fast
3. you can get many different pad materials to suit your driving style, whereas with shoes, you're kinda stuck.

My daughter actually broke the pumpkin in her 80 due to running the axle without oil - leaked out the end; thing seized big time. We picked up an entire 84 GSL housing with discs, calipers and LSD shipped on a pallet to the house. However, the pumpkin input was bigger than the drum pumpkin I believe so we had to change the D/S too. Finally, we had to use a braided SS line kit which came with the fittings to match earlier to the later brake lines. Otherwise, piece of cake.
