That reminds me of a Toresen type LSD... but there should be some sort of pinnon gear where those holes are....

At first it looks like RX-4 13B 28 spline ,
But the cut outs in the diff carrier for the bigger ring gear ? , suggests it's from a 1991 onwards Mazda / Ford E- series delivery type van / pickup ?? How many bolts holding the ring gear on & spline's ?? Just a guess ! |

It came out of my bro's 74 RX-4. I had to take everything apart due to an oil leak. It confused the shit out of me. I though I've seen them all. I should have investigated some more but I've got to get it back on the road so I can get more miles on a newly built full-bridge TII block. Whatever it is, its a 3.90 and left 2 tire marks.

Its clearly a 4 pinion spider unit,so its not your typical open diff that you'd see in an S or GS.
The lack of ramps on the spider pin shafts tells me its not a torque locking type diff either,like the GSL and SE have. No indicators that its a Torsen either.....they tend to be more open to allow the oil easy access to the many internal gears.Also,that side gear appears to be a standard bevel type differential gear,rather than the spiral type worm gears of the Torsen. Is not a Viscous LSD since the carrier is open. I see two possibilites.......its either a standard peg-leg diff with a beefy,4 pin carrier unit. Or its a passive, clutch LSD similar to the Trac Lock LSD made by Dana Spicer.There would be clutch discs and springs under the side gears which provide some holding strength,but let loose once the difference in traction becomes more than they can hold.There is no increase in holding power upon acceleration because the carrier is not a split type with loading ramps on the spider pins.These type of LSD's are destine to become fully standard open diffs once the discs wear and the spring pressure subsides. Also.......any diff can lay two strips of rubber,regardless of if its open,LSD or a locker.Its just a matter of having exactly equal traction at both tires. |

Wow, super bright yellow rock crawler. Now, that is some nice flash. I love the old school Jeeps and I think one time I saw an old Willy's that was on Xtreme 4X4. Tan four door I think. Not one real major dent/scratch on it. Thing was a beaut.

Wow, that thing is a beaut. And, nice choice of a Chevy 2.8L V6 in it. Those things, despite their small displacement, gave some decent grunt. Ever thought of a 4.3L TBI V6? Had one of those in my little S-10, that thing has some nice power to it. Just like a 350, but with the two rear cylinders lopped off.
