Difficult to remove intake manifold from 13BEFI?
 

I'm just wondering iabout how long it would take to remove the intake manifold from my 13B.

The main difference between my manifold and others, is the upper IM is welded to the lower IM... so its one piece, and I think there are 6 bolts holding the LIM to the engine block...

Should I just remove those 6 bolts and it will all come away?

I need to get to the primary fuel rail, which is hard thanks to the weld.

Why in the world would someone weld the upper and lower intake together?

Oh, and so as to not totally waste your time, Removing the lower intake bolts will make it come away assuming everthing else is disconnected.

I have absolutely no idea - that is how i bought it.. previous owner didn't seem to be too educated about such things...

My guesses:
- someone was working on it who didn't know rotaries too well and applied some plumbers logic or something...
- save a gasket
- maybe the manifold was damaged and wouldnt seal with a gasket... so... the cheap way would be to weld it together?

We will never know...

Something else that came with the car... I dont know what it is exactly, but the mount points had to be severely bent for it to latch on... Might see if I can find any writing on the underside...

When removing the UIM/LIM (weld, wtf, over?), be sure that you remove the coolant hoses running from the back of the waterpump and then going from the Thermowax Pellet down to the top of the block at the rear housing. These will prevent you from sliding the manifold(s) away from the engine core.

Also, I'd recommend removing the throttle cable mount, the ground (from alternator), and the 6 bolts, as you've described. Getting this far will let you get the manifolds out of the way, but that also means that you'll be removing the 6-ports and their piping (attached to the LIM).

While you're there, might as well clean it up as best you can and ensure that your 6-ports are turning smoothly. It seems like it'll be harder to do this job and reassemble, but give it a go. Good luck,

Hmm I don't have thermowax or those cooling hoses heh, one less thing to worry about. I took off the throttle cable mount, managed to get by without touching the alternator - had to slide the whole unit to the side before lifting it up.

It came off pretty easily. I cleaned up the face of the manifold and the engine with some petrol, coated the new fibreglass gasket in oil and pushed it back on. Should have mentioned my auxilary port actuators... well - they dont exist.. so no problem there. Wiped out the intake ports as best I could with a petroled up rag.

Managed to find some T joins as well, so I've hooked up the primary and secondary fuel rails in parallel... Why you ask? Well both rails have a pressure regulator on the end... why? good question... Whoever put this motor together... I really dont know.

Yeah, how lucky was I :-) It's my first car too, so a bloody nice learning curve there to begin with, but getting on top of it now :)

I never really knew much about cars... I didn't know why people wanted them... what good they really did. Then one night I saw some photos of an RX7 on a car trading site... Well... After letting a mate talk me into them, I managed to talk my parents into a loan, and 1 week later I hopped on a plane to fly interstate to buy the love of my life haha! I didn't even have a licence. Pure insanity. I really knew nothing at all about what I was buying, but I knew that somewhere along the lines it would all work out :)

Its muffler putty, I had been experiencing a leak so smothered it all over everything in hope of filling it up... pretty hard from under the car without jacking it up. :)
