Different Flywheels on 12a's?
well, it seems that my 80 12a has a much more shallow flywheel than my 83-84 12a does.... which means i cant use the clutch, or can i just swap the flywheel.
and if i even CAN swap the flywheel, where the hell do i procure a socket that large? |
If you just swap flywheels, the engine will vibrate. The counterweights are different.
|
Yes, I believe the FBs had a different (lighter) flywheel than the earlier SA models. The socket is 54mm, you can get them at Sears, but the flywheel wrench sold by Mazdatrix works great with it's two-foot mega-handle.
They're not cheap, but they make the job lots easier. |

They are cast into the flywheel.
Your cheapest way out is to just buy the 215mm clutch set for an early 12A. |
dont i need one for the 83-85 12a, as thats the motor its going on to... 225mm i believe?
|
Use the 225mm one if you are using the later engine.
|
i am using the later one, i guess it has to be post 83 cause it has the different flywheel.
right? |
Sounds like it. Did it have the water/oil cooler on it?
Even if you could use the 80 flywheel, I wouldn't, they are pretty heavy. |
