DFIS w/GM D-585 coil

Hi all,

A friend of mine has a couple of spare GM D-585 coils (off of GMC Yukon) that he's using for his RB25. I've been wanting to do 2GCDFIS, but I'm not sure if it'd be possible to use those coils instead of the FC coils. My understanding (based on this post) is that the ignitor isn't needed... just a ballast resistor and the coil itself. Am I understanding this properly? Also, is there any risk of blowing something up with using the more powerful coil?

I'm not an electrical engineer so I don't even know if what I'm asking is feasible. If I'm way off or if the setup would require major engineering effort, tell me so and I'll move happily along with trying to find some 2nd gen coils.

Thanks!

I'm playing with the Ford TFI coils. Similiar type of coil but the Ford unit has no embedded ignitor.
Heres the thread where I'm playing with it now:

Yeah, I just read through your whole thread (and several other DFIS threads). I'm trying to find a schematic for the ignitor built onto the D-585 but no luck just yet. When/if I do, I'll compare it to the HEIs. Since they're both GM, I'm assuming they'll be similar (an ignitor is an ignitor when you don't count the ECU side... I think).
