Detonation at low rpms, No power above 4

Alright, i installed an msd system in my car. It took a while to get it running, but now it has no high end power and detonated when you first hit the gas. Its an msd6al system, with stock coils. Everything is hooked up according to the article at mazdaspeed. Anyone have any ideas what going wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Are your Trailing plug wires going to the right plugs? If you've got 'em reveresed, it makes the engine behave really strangely (and is quite bad for it).

I personally wouldn't use an MSD on a rotary (in direct fire), but don't take my word for it.

Have you messed with the timing lately? How about the vacuum advance? Is it on there?

i'm not trying to be a wise-ass, so please don't take offense, but have you taken out the test chip that it comes with and replaced it with the one you are actually supposed to use?

It sounds like you have the wires all crossed.

Make sure the green and red pickup wires go to the right places too. Red goes the MSD green and green goes to MSD purple.

Alright, to answer the questions. The plugs are going to the correct plugs, im not running vaccuum advance, because when i do, i get a great hessitation in my accel. I took out the test chip and put in the 8k limiter. And no matter what i do to the timing, it still has detonation when you first hit the gas, runs okay, then loses all power at 4k...

Are you SURE the plug wires are on correct?

Barwick 08-05-02 11:26 PM

wouldn't detonation kill your engine like it does to every other rotary out there?

jeremy 08-06-02 12:58 AM

sounds like the signal to the msd is off and throwing your timing off.

jacobcartmill 08-06-02 05:12 PM

If thats the case, how would i correct it?

peejay 08-06-02 05:14 PM

see jeff20B's post above.

also, you DO have the MSD hooked up to the leading and not the trailing, right?
