:D I need help again, sorry :) I need some questions answered PLEASE HELP ME:)

ok, I took a carb off a blown engine(it was blown 2 weeks before) so I knew it worked. But I let a friend put it on. So I didnt know if the hoses where on there right. Now the damn thing floods. The floats, are right, and it is now cleaned(sprayed a full can of starting fluid in the fuel inlet hose, and let it sit over night) It is running MUCH better, but I think it is still gonna flood(havent drivin it far, too scared it will stall, and I will have to push it back to my house, thats a few miles away).

I have noticed, that the pipe for the emissions(79/80 thermal reactor) (the little pipe that comes out next to the muffler) when I ATF'ed it, most of the smoke came outa that:( So I think my thermal reactor is collapsed. And after I drove to the gas station and back, my friend that was following me, said the inside of my muffler was red, so I checked and it was. So any body that has ANY SUGGESTIONS, DO NOT HESSITATE.

THANX

Oh yeah, can you tell me what hoses go here in the pic, and what they do, because I think this is a contributing factor to the flooding:)

THANX AGAIN, LATERZ, Andrew

heres the bottom of them

itzweapon 04-07-02 04:23 PM

-red? red hot? at the back of the exhaust?
-flooding? was the carb turned upside down?
-is the return line connected? are there any screws loose on the carb adjustment system?
-if the headders are glowing red hot.. it usally means the car is running lean.. or the timming is serverly off.
-reset it .. by.. aligning the main pully to the pin.. make sure the pin is stright.. and that the 2nd notch on the pully[the one closer to the driver side is lined up with the pin.
then pull the distributer <-check spelling out.. by removing the 10mm bolt. pull it completely out of the housing.. and align the indent on the botton of the gear to the line on shaft.. then carefully insert back into the housing.
-make sure that it doesent turn rotor does not turn when you try to insert it back in.
-that should set the timming dead on.. you'll need to fine tune it [advance it] with a timming light.

I had my carb upside down when i was removing the choke cables and whatnot, what are the precatuions that I need to consider when re-installing it onto the newly re-built engine? Also is there any way that you can look at the carb and see if it needs a re-build, it seemed to run fine when it was on the car but there is some rust on the botttom of the body where it makes contact with the intake manifold (or atleast that polastic thing to protect the manifold from oil contact).

cheers'

rich

if the muffler is whats glowing then i would say that your muffler is bad,
that may also be why no atf smoke came out it,
cause maybe its clogged.

the hoses that are missing off the air box need to be plugged if your not using them,
they are not what is causing your engine to flood but are letting dirty air into the carbie

79+80_rx-7 04-08-02 01:10 AM

The thing is, I CANT FIND THE HOSES. I know ALOT of them are in the wrong spot, but I just dont know which ones:( The manual looks like a maze:( So I have no starting point.....which I am trying at.........

The muffler, is NOT clogged(it was only red hot on the INSIDE). It does puff out some smoke, just not as much as the other one......

I set the timing already, nothing different, it was set right in the first place(I did it manually when I swapped from points to electric:), AND I set it with a timing light)

So, I shoulda asked,

What do the hoses do???

Where the HELL are they :D????

I have no hoses, with nothing on them, except on that runs from the subzero coolant box thingy:( I dont think that one goes to the air cleaner:(

And there is nothing that is not hooked up in my carb( nothing is unhooked, but that DOES NOT MEAN, its hooked up ***right***. :( This SUX, but I love my car...........................:D

BIG THANX, LATERZ, Andrew(the stupid one)

Just messing with ya:D Can you answer this one peejay??
MUCHO, MUCHO, Glacias, Audios, Andrew

ooooo, ooooo, pick me, pick me :D ANYONE???

peejay 04-08-02 04:25 AM

Fix the hoses first, then go from there.

V8kilr had some good insight there... possibly the muffler is collapsed internally, which could also cause the thermal reactor to fail. (Having the hoses routed improperly could also cause the thermal reactor to fail...)

79+80_rx-7 04-08-02 04:37 AM

OK, the thing is I DONT KNOW WHERE THE HELL THE DAMN HOSES ARE, I NEED TO KNOW WHERE THEY START, AND END. :D So ANYBODY know where it starts, and ends??? THANX LATERZ

If you don't have one, get a manual. The Haynes manual is remarkably thorough for the '79-80 models. (The '81-85 models are an afterthought in the final chapter - our loss, your gain) If you already have the Haynes, then study it. There is nothing anybody could tell you that you aren't 99.9% likely to find in the Haynes.

The great thing about studying the systems is this: The more you understand what the devices are, why they are there, and how they should work, the less it looks like a maze of hoses and solenoids, and the more it makes perfect sense, and the easier it is to diagnose. So instead of seeing "Man, lookit all of those solenoids and hoses", you'd see it and think "Okay, this solenoid does X, so it has to be connected to Y and Z which are over here, and the computer turns it on under W conditions. And THIS solenoid..." It's kinda Zen... the more you focus on the minute details, the clearer the whole becomes. (Yes, I'm like this in real life too :) )

And if you think you got it bad, you gotta see the nightmare under the hood of the '85... still trying to learn it. :) But hey, at they all use computer-controlled solenoids... I had nightmares about trying to diagnose running problems and vacuum leaks on a friend's '79 Ford. You see, those cars didn't have computer control - it was all vacuum solenoids and temperature switches and instad of everything laid out neatly like we have, it was like Ford simply took a great glob of 10" long hoses and threw them behind the carb.

79+80_rx-7 04-08-02 05:19 AM

ok, ok off to study teh damn thing:D THANX. Well, can you tell me where the hell the hoses for the air cleaner, are located on the carb:D :D :D THANX, Then after I find that out, I will do even more studying:D THANX LATERZ

- (I run out to get my book)

peejay 04-08-02 05:20 AM

I don't think they go to the carb... unfortunately my Haynes is not here at the moment and my '80 engine is partially torn apart.

79+80_rx-7 04-08-02 05:24 AM

Thats cool....My manual is out in the damn car,so I am gonna have to go out in the cold, and wet weather, and get it.... Oh wait, I lost the damn keys...... DAMNIT, oh well, I will find them when I wake up:)

THANX LATERZ, Andrew

Anybody else???

How does that help me???? Just curious:D THANX LATERZ, oh yeah, I looked at the manual, and ALMOST EVERYTHING is hooked up WRONG :( Now things get intersting:( Any body have a header they will sell me CHEAP(I dont care if it is a pacesetter or monzas:)) I need a header that I can use, I just need it to get rid of the thermal reactors:) I have a header already made for the stock system, but I havent got a flang for it yet, So All I can do is bolt it up , and point it in the right direction:)

THANX LATERZ, Andrew

gee what??? Homey Gee Dawg????

Evan 04-08-02 07:12 PM

Muffler is red to due mixture being too rich. I experienced the same problem when switching carbs on my 84. I had a couple hoses hooked up wrong and it creates a vacuum inside the carb making it run rich. When I shut the car off, I could look into the carb and see the gas pouring into the motor. Made it really hard to start! So I eliminated the rats nest and locked out the dizzy after setting the timing. Runs great and knocked 4 tenths off the quarter time.

79+80_rx-7 04-08-02 09:17 PM

DAMN, the same thing is happening to me, hard to start, and can see gas pour into the motor after I shut it off:( So the hoses are hooked up wrong eh?? I took some pictures, and I found some hoses hooked up wrong:) So I want to post pics, with out having to do 12 posts, how do I post pics??? Do I have to have a free picture site thingy???

Thanks LATERZ, Andrew

79+80_rx-7 04-08-02 11:40 PM

ok, I got some pictures, with questions. most of them is about this line that is "suposed" to go to the charcoal canister:( I am in the middle of making a picture showing where the line runs.......It will be here within 30 min:) THANX LATERZ
