csp autocross car, what to do?
 

i got an 85 12a car from my friend in a barter, and am planning on turning it into a csp auto-x car. i have been running sm in my wrx for a few years now, and want to go to something lighter. my question is, how far can i go with the engine, and still be legal. i know what is allowed for piston engines, but i am keeping my 12a. the car has 175,000 miles on it, so i'm gonna pull the engine apart and do the rebuild. what can i do to it while its apart (port-mathc, clean up runners, etc). i know the intake is unlimited, so i'm gonna remove the rats nest, get the sterling carb, new air box w/k&n, and clean up the manifold. also planning on underdrive main pulley (dual belt rb with stock dual belt alt), rb street port full exhaust, light steel flywheel, act clutch, msd 3 coil setup, along with a ton of suspension stuff. any suggestions/opinions? thanks

This actually goes back to how hardcore your going to race. If you race just alot of local events then you prolly wont get torn down, and they're not as strict on your mods. I've been told that you can't port your engine but just polish slightly but the intake you can do whatever, also with the carb. Thats pretty much the concern, but you'll soo want LSD if you dont, and alot of suspension mods such as springs and actually remove the rear sway bar. This is from experience and being friends with a ITA/CSP racer. Oh and gut the interior out! Get rid of everything that doesnt do anything when you race.

Well I went the IT route since I was planning to club race anyway. That allowed me to do alot that SOLO II CSP rules wont allow. The SCCA really screws the rotaries in SP. No porting. ANex, gutting is illegal in SP last I checked.

HAHA well when they ask "No interior huh?" I burst out laughing because what I had of the rear of interior came out via vacum (rotted)

what are the restrictions for the different classes? anyone know?

Get connected with your local SCCA region (NeOhio, I believe) and see if you can pick up a rulebook. You might even be able to get an old one free from another autocrosser; I don't think the CSP rules are changing much at all for 2005. I know you can't port match, and you can't gut the interior - although there are things you can do legally to lighten the car.

yeah, i heard the rules will be available online starting in 05, so i'll wait to see them for sure, i'm jsut trying to build the car in my head for now. thanks for the ideas. i knwo you can't gut the interior, but you can get lighter seats, remove stereo, and some other weight removal. i'm gonna stick with local events for now, but would like to get more hardcore in the future. i've been running with the akron sports car club, b/c are local scca region is having a lot of problems right now, and they cancelled the auto-x season this past year.
