Couple Random Questions

I have a few questions, some of which have been answered in searches but I kind of want to elaborate a little more.

One, as far as oil filters, would Fram # PH2849A work on my '84 GS? I had one on my '79 and it was very nice because it was big and filtered better than the dinky pro-tec ones that I normally get. I could go longer between oil changes.

Two, this is kind of one I searched and got info on but never found a real answer. My 12A header vibrates against the heat shield and I'm wondering how you guys overcame this.

Lastly, my carb I took off a stock '85 GS which had been sitting 2 years ('09 reg.) She idled beautifully for the initial 3 minutes or so but now it is like the jets are clogged. Will not idle at all and is very rough at partial throttle. Wide open, she flies though. I think maybe if I run it a lil while it'll clean up some, but I should prolly just rebuild the carb, or at least just clean it up. I figure if it ran great initially, then that little bit of crap is easy to get rid of and I can put off rebuilding the carb a bit longer.

What do you guys think?

1-that filter will work just fine.

2-bend it off the header

3-u should rebuild the carb if it's been sitting that long with fuel in it.

1. there is hardly any filter in the fram canister, avoid these "filters". the bypass valve is cardboard. the best filter is the OEM mazda one, the b6y1/2 is the short and the jey0-14-302 is tall.

2. bend shield, maybe look for a bad motor or trans mount

3. you could try some fuel system cleaner in there, or so, but chances are high you'll have to pull at least the top off and clean out the passages

3) change fuel filter!!! drain tank and stop using the sludgy fuel you have left. refill tank and run a can of Seafoam in it...

A oil larger filter does not mean you can go longer between oil changes. I can't tell you how many different ways this is wrong. I works with air filters, air is generally clean, oil just gets progressively dirty and fuel saturated.

If your not experienced in carb rebuilds, run a can of Seafoam through a 1/4 full tank of fuel first.

Just changed the fuel filter a few days back. Car sat for 8 weeks and put a fresh tank of fuel in it, and I just seafoamed it. Good to know about those Fram filters, it just seemed like it filtered better than the protec/wix i usually use. But I guess not. I'm going to drive the car a bit before I clean the carb. There can't be too much crap in the jets if it ran great at first, right? Or am I kidding myself?

interesting how so many ppl dislike the fram filters. i personally have never had any problems with them. maybe i'm just one of a lucky few.
