correct brake hoses on 1985 GSL-SE

I have an 1985 RX-7 GLS-SE (13B) with disc brakes in the back.
I need to replace all the rubber lines in the back, I count 3.
(one for the left caliper, 1 for the right caliper, and one on the axle in the middle)
When I look on Oreilly auto parts (or in person in the store), they say there are 2 uper and 2 lower hoses. Is this a mistake on Oreilly's part, or am I missing something?

Wow, those are inexpensive... compared to online parts stores. By looking at that website link you gave me, it looks like there is only 1 upper hose. I was worried there was another one somewhere I was missing.

Theoretically, as long as the hose will reach (and not get caught in other stuff by being too long), all the rear hoses should be interchangeable so long as they've got the right fittings. If the ones on RA have a length spec, I would try measuring yours, also looking at the fittings to see if all are the same. FB cars (yours) use the M10 x 1.0 thread for brake lines, which is why you shouldn't have to worry about interchanging lines in case you don't pick the exact right ones. SA's use M10 x 1.25 which RA doesn't seems to know....

Anyways, as long as the fittings match in style, and hoses in length ya should be fine.

Here's a thought, perhaps upper means 'further up in the system' ei, the body to axle hose, and the 'lowers' are for the calipers.

For a disc brake RX7 there are 5 hoses; 2 at the front and 3 at the rear. The rears have one hose to the axle and a hose for each caliper. For drum brake cars there are just 3 hoses with only one at the rear. You might want to look at getting SS ones from Mazdatrix . They can make the brakes feel less mushy.

Hot dang! Why did I never notice those... I think I'll have to pick up a set of those SA lines. RA sent me FB front lines by mistake when I went to replace them (and they still need to be replaced), but they were so cheap that the return shipping just couldn't justify it.

That has very clear exploded parts diagrams and lists the associated Mazda part number.

All brake hoses are still available from Mazda as far as I believe.

I am weary of non OEM hoses for some reason. Mazdatrix says their stainless line are DOT approved.

What are the ratings of the generic Rock Auto type hoses that I assume come from China/Taiwan?

I know I'm a few days late to the party, but stainless are a HUGE upgrade over even brand new rubber.

I installed what appeared to be an obscure brand from Amazon ("DNA Motoring" search for B00P0GEYH4) and they were totally fine and for under $25 a steal. Two funny things about these - the back of the box states "Russell brake hoses" so I'm thinking that maybe DNA Motoring is just a reseller. Also funny, for my '83 there was an extra rear hose in the box. Including a picture of the back of the box with that "Russell" info and the three lines I used.

Anyway, I've had these on my car for almost a year now and no problems. Just make sure you buy new washers because these don't include any. Reusing the old ones will result in a slow leak shortly after install (yep, I was being lazy).

"DNA Performance" stainless lines from Amazon. See second line on box mentions "Russell brake hoses" - I think they may be a re-seller of old stock.

Finally, if you do decide to order rubber hoses from Rock Auto, don't order them until you are ready to do the job so you can return if they aren't right. My first set of rubber hoses came from Rock Auto and the thread pitch for the rear axle hose was incorrect. After that issue I always double check the manufacture sites for part numbers now. Like I said, the stainless are worth it, and the price on Amazon is lower than what you would pay for a just front rubber hoses with shipping.
