Considering getting a first gen RX7

well I am currently considering getting into another RX7 maybe another 2nd gen but perhaps a first gen. What year/ model would you guys suggest and WHY? I would prefer to have an LSD, so maybe a GSL. however I could just swap one in at anytime. I have access to a 84 or 85 gsl-se but the rear quarter panel has a dent. I would be modding it out, slowly as well, maybe make it into a daily driver/autox car.

How are the automatic transmissions in the first gens? I know of an really nice all stock auto 83 gsl, with super low miles. i coul dpick up at a good price. but I dont liek auto's very much.

I am trying to track down a lead on a 84 or 85 rx7 imsa edition. the factory optioned one that is. but I cant seem to find much information about it, and I need to locate the car before anything.

Thanks for your imput. Matt22

well matt, since wrecking my 3 and having no luck finding another, and this rx4 i got from a guy in GA turned out to be nothing but junk, i've ended up going with an '84 base model just cause i need something to put this engine in, plus it was $50. been sitting under some oak trees for several years so it's kinda black, but it's really either white or cream in color. i plan to gt some pics of it soon. if i were in ur shoes, i'd go with a GSL-SE. FI 13b, usually have quite a few options, and a wide choice of aftermarket wheels. as for auto's, i've never had one since i like shifting gears. good luck in ur decision.

Yep, stick with the GSL-SE, wheel selection is great(4x114) and you got better drivetrain components(LSD and better ratio's)

I second that. I wish I would have had got a GSL-SE but I got what I could afford at the time. It is for sale BTW. Check out the NW section. (shameless plug!).

the1st gen automatic's are jokes apperently and arent as fun to drive as standard

yeah, i'd probably go with the -se too, but SA's are awsome. They don't have all the goodies that the later first gens did, but they're so classically awsome. (imo, the interior is better too!)

first gens are addicting, i might add. I have one now, and I already want like 2 more fb's, an fd, and a rx-3!

I would definitely go a first gen :P I have an SA. I have driven an imported Jap FC Turbo and its faster than the SA of course, but I find the driving experience in the first gen to be a much more raw and enjoyable experience. Plus you can always mod the engine for some speedier runs :)

The first gen keeps things simple. I'm not sure about the different models available but after you put some work into it, the returns will be well worth it.

Also I would stay away from a stock auto.

All the best!!

Cheers,

Paul.

i have a first gen GSL myself for some reason id go with the carb 12a ive driven a GSL-SE and i dont really like the sound of it, the carb is just me...call me crazy cause i think the se can pull more horses...anyway i like the way carbs sound , machanical....raw horsepower, but then again its not about what we like or prefer its really what you want cause in the end your the one driving it...but id test both if i were you...just to be sure of yourself.....

thanks guys.
well i like th eidea of cars being simple, I have had a 88 rx7 and it was great never had a problem. but i have also owned a couple 1st gens only drove one of them but the engine had major problems so i didnt have any fun in it.
I am considering trying the gsl-se i mean i couldn't lose money on the deal. all i need to do is install the tranny. and it should run. any other opinions?
any info on imsa edition cars?
