compression test

hey guys I was wondering what testers I could use to accurately gauge my compression? is a leak down tester accurate? or is there some sort of formula you can use with a regular compression tester( like add or minus 20% of the reading)?

I ask as I don't want to pay 60 or 90 dollars for a compression test from specialties or the dealer.

Any help at all would be great.

If you just want to know if the motor is good or bad, and not specific numbers, you can pull the first plug and crank it, then put the first back in and take the second out and crank it again. When cranking it you should hear three bursts of air PFFF PFFF PFFF...If you only hear one burst its a bad apex seal I think...It's probably on this forum somewhere and I know its on nopistons.com somewhere, I'm new but I've learned that much so far....
