Cold/Ram Air

I have reciently heard about an awsome idea dealing with cold air intakes. First pop the hood and look at the intake "tube" (black; looks like a horn). Now if you cut that tube just a bit and add a "connector" that binds the cut "horn" to the hood and cut a hole in the hood, why you would have an air scoop that gives your car ram air. Personally, I would purchase one of those scoops. Please tell me what you think of this idea.

why cut a hole in the hood when you can extend the air inlet pipe from just in front of the rad to down behind the front grille to make ram air? It's still being rammed in as the car punches a hole through the air in front of it

most of us have done what manntis is talking about. the se's use this type stock. i just grabbed an se radiator box side piece and bolted it into mine and then routed aluminum foil dryer hose from where the hron mounts to the hole. the foil will reflect heat from the bay. the scoops you are talking about are available. some of the earlier 300zx tt used them stock.

Is piping the air intake in front on the radiator still relatively easy with the air cond condensor there, this is in an 1980 Rx-7? And how much power difference does this make? Still recomended with a foward facing bonnet scoop on the hood??

cold air/ram air intakes are generally going to give you a power gain probably in the 3-5hp range. its not going to be hugely significant since our engine bay is not really hot. i never thought about the condensor since i dropped my a/c but i'm sure that most of the se's had a/c and they still had the condensor there. mine's done in a 79. i can't remember if i have any pics though.

The rad sits almost a foot behind the bumper; there's tons of room to run a ram air pickup in front.

The only reason for a bonnet scoop is if you like the look. Some have moulded ducts into the right headlight cover to do the same.

I was actually thinking of putting a cold air intake on my car just behind the air dam, and I like the idea of using foil-covered dryer hose. Unfortunately, my car died on me (vapor lock- my fault) 2 and a half weeks ago, and the shop still has it (they're waiting on an exhaust part from Des Moines, because the one they ordered initially didn't fit). I should have it back by Friday at the latest, though, and I'm probably going to try that dryer hose idea. i do have one question for jeremy, though. How did you mount the ends of the dryer hose?
