Cluth Problems
 

Seems like every clucth i bought for my 82 '7 is the wrong one, the pressure plate is too deep, I have tried everywhere, ATC, clutch masters, and even autozone, and all those parts don't seem to fit, Does anybody know what the problems is, PLZ !!

I just replaced the clutch in my 85 in January, the part # is (for mine anyway) AEX 20-1411

Also there's 2RTR-1146 70

The 82 model takes the smaller clutch/pp. The clutch changed in 83. Go to mazdatrix.com for a nice discussion of clutches/flywheels and the like.

Right, ht e 82 clutch is smaller, , When i call clucth master i explain the problem that i had, and they told me for an 82 there are 2 part numbers (one for early 82 and the other one for the late 82-83 )so they send me the thinest one and still didn't fit, now i guess i have to either go with atc, that i know someone already has,or just go to the dealer, before i'll go to mazdatrix,, Thanx either way !!for the help, If you guys know anithing else please let me know !!, i'll be online looking for my clutch!!!! :bigthumb:

If you are looking for a stock replacement one. go to napa and have them get you one made by Beckarnley. they use Oem components in their set equivelent to the dealer at a fraction of the price.

Actually, OEM would be my last option, I really want a high performance one, It will be abused !!, Which brand shoul I go with though ???

I just found out that on my 82, a 83-91 flywheel had been installed, which explain why NOT one 82 clutch set will fit, now i just order a H.duty plate from ATC and a street disc as well, let's see how it works. By the way the production date is 1982 ( not an 83 early production) this was more complicated than I ever thought, now I'm being told also to replace my slave and master cylinder, because they say "first generation" are known to have problems with them !!, now WHAT?? :confused:

I feel your pain. One of my 83's has an 81 flywheel (lightest one). I went through the same thing.

Wouldn't the cast counterweight in the '83-on flywheel now be a mismatch for the front counterweight--assuming the front CW wasn't swapped as well?

Just figured I'd give you something else to worry about =p.

Jay, It's not that difficult if It's not the one clutch it's got to be the other. Those 2 clutches cover all N/A 7's from 79-92. Who know's you could have a 7-1/4 flywheel made for a Tilton style clutch?

It is frustrating when you have it all apart and you go to install the clutch and it won't work.

Yes, this clutch (83-92) fits just right, it was the flywheel that got me into this mess, Thanx !!, Now the problem was when a guy from clutchmaster told me that they have to kind a clutches for the same model and year, which made think that i was getting the wrong part everytime, now I know the problem, what i didn't know is that one can switch flywheels regardless of the year, at least i know my next purchase after a carburator would be a lighter flywheel !!! ( I found one for $800).

I almost forgot, when I said It was too deep, I meant the thickness of the pressure plate, when bolted-on, the disk would have too much space(wasn't thight enough), The one that I got know is thinner so the disk is not moving around loose. !! i f anynoe knows about a lighter flywheel for less than 800 let me know please !! I've got one I will sell you. It is the racing beat lightwieght alluminum one. It is the lightest they make (lighter than the steel one). It cost $455. I'll let it go for $275, I also have the stock clutch and pp to go along with it if you want. Used, but in pretty good condition.
