Clutch Fan Removal

I've done a bunch of searching on adding an electric fan, and I am very confused on one issue:

On an '84 gsl-se engine, after removing the clutch fan, there is an aluminium block that bolts to the fan pulley with 4 long bolts. I have read that it is necessary to cut these bolts and re-attach them to the pulley.

Who has done this on the '84 13b? How much should I cut from the bolts? Any chance of writing up a walkthrough?

Edit: Whoops, didn't read his 1st sentence.

I just eyeballed it, but i had to cut them a couple of times. the problem is that the screws hit the water pump without that spacer. But you want the extra room when you take out the spacer.

Just get some short screws. they only need to be about a 1/2 long or less.

If you don't cut them or buy shorter bolts, they will grind their way into the water pumps neck

Oh, i should have told you. they are 6mm by 1 pitch screws. they are very common on bikes, foreign cars, and such. if you use allen head screws you will be able to tighten them better.
