im making a roof vent and fiberglass sun roof for my rex...I thought it would be cool...so i mocked up a posterboard model to scale...mounted it to my steel sunroof and use newsprint and flour paste to give it some rigidity...now i am in the process of glassing the vent...damn is glassing hard...air bubbles suck!!

anyway i now have new respect for glassers.

here are some pics...

any words of advice would be cool...

hmmm. thats a cool idea. i was going to do a roof vent awhile back, but i never got around to it.

I hear what youre saying about it being hard. Ive done some fiberglassing/bondo before. Time consuming. What are you going to do to hold it to the roof real sturdy. Im thinking some really short screws counter-sunk(sp) on the edges(if theres room), then bondo and glaze it. Should be cool.

does it do anything? or just create drag? doesn't look too bad.

Hey thats not a bad idea. I have a hood I've been wanting to do something with. maybe I will give this a try to.

im going to put flex hose coming into the cabin from the vent...to keep things cool...im doing this cuz im removing the climate control system...

im also gonna glass a new sunroof...and attach this vent to that...probaly glass them together.

Neat idea!

reminds me of the plastic vents on the old 70's conversion vans.

vent looks a little tall, it'll attract a lot of attention. mabye shorter?

they do make urethane hood vents that could be used for this.

i dont know...i thought about using a TII vent, but decided to go it on my own...the vent is olny 2.5 inches tall...not too tall.

Air bubbles,, huh ? you want to know how to not have all the air bubbles ??.

use a paint roller to spread the resin to 'wet-out ' the cloth first, then a metal roller, to roll out any air bubbles.

leif 08-04-04 06:02 PM

hum...good idea....i will try it when i lay the cloth over top.
