Checking manual trans fluid level?
 

I think I might be leaking some fluid from the manual trans and I would like to moniter the level of fluid on it. I was going to just drain and replace the fluid with new, but I noticed in the manual it says something about checking the level of the oil? The manual I have says it takes about 2 qts of oil. Is there any way to check/moniter the level? I assume you don't just add oil until it starts to run out the filler hole like on the rearend?

that's what you do..to put it loosely..STICK YOUR FINGER IN THE HOLE ..IF IT'S WET ..YOUR FINE!...(haha)..in other words you should feel fluid if you put your finger at the base of the transmission fill hole(manual trans)..if not add fluid til it starts to "ooze' then replace the plug.

Thought more than 2 qts will fit in then? Thats simple enough if it's correct. Thanks!

Its just like the rear end. Put in fluid until it weeps out the hole and your full. Just check it by putting your pinky straight in and see if its get oil on it. If it does, its full.

Why do you think its leaking ? Where are you seeing oil ?

It's hard to tell. I just bought the car and drove it 465 miles back home. So there is fluid residue all over. Not a ton but enough to make a quarter sized spot on the driveway. The oil in the engine trans looked like honey when I changed them(so did the rear end fluid). So I can't tell which is leaking. I wiped everything down when I changed all the fluids and didn't see anymore leaks? I'm thinking the trans might have been recently overserviced? Is there a vent it could come out of? It seemed like alot more than 2 qts came out when I drained it. Or maybe one of the drain plugs was leaking? I'm really not sure but it seems to have fixed itself for now.
