Ch.2 Passing Smog & The Beauty of oversteer

Chapter 2: Passing Smog & the beauty of oversteer

Thought I'd give an update on my "Revival", perhaps my experiences will help somebody else out in the future.

I got my 83 GSL 3 months ago from a friend who had been using it as a trash can for the past two years :( and then all but abandoned it. I got it for $50. I went through various issues with getting it running right and replacing the clutch slave cylinder, but finally I was ready to face California's dreaded smog test. I work at a College and am friends with the head of the Auto Tech dept. so he let me hook it up the their exhaust analyzer to see what it was putting out. = Gross polluter!

The cat never seemed to be reaching it's optimal temp (as measured with one of those laser beam temp analyzer's) so I figured with 160k on the car that was a good place to start. A week later I jacked the car up, pulled the cat off, lifted it up to the sky, and saw nothing but blue! Well, to make a long story not too long it passed with a new cat, although it was close since the exhaust system was leaky. Oh well, at least I have a good excuse now when I tell the wife I need that RB exhaust! :D

Yesterday I took the 7 out on one of my favorite twisty roads. My other car, a 94 Probe GT, has a J-spec engine with around 190hp, full aftermarket adjustable suspension, is front wheel drive, and with tires 50% wider and would undoubtably be faster up this road. That having been said, I had the most fun on that road in the 7 that I've ever had. This car steps the rear end out so nicely and brings it back in so easily that in this case faster is NOT always more fun!

Well, on to ch.3 for me, which includes new rear wheel bearings, a new brake master cylinder, and who knows what else. ;)

Glad to hear it! I'm getting a cheapo/free 83 gross polluter and i happen to have an extra bonerz cat in the garage.
