cat replacement/air pump
 

Hi, im new to this forum so I thought i would try a question. I have an 85 se that i just put a rb cat replacement pipe and muffler on. I had'nt noticed before that the pipe into the main cat that connects to the air pump had rusted away and was gone. All that is hanging from the pump is a rubber hose with about a half inch diameter. The car has always run fine. Is there a check valve missing too? What about the 5th and 6th ports? Any ideas? thanks.

With that setup, you do not have any need for the air pump any longer... youll need an ACV blockoff plate though. Get that sensing pipe back on there or forget about your 6 ports working the way they should..or you can always just wire the actuators open.

For some reason i thought the air pump is what the 5th and 6th ports worked off of. Weren't we talking about that the other day ?

is there a check valve in the system, near the pump? I don't have a fsm, just a haynes.

No, the only check valve is near the fuel tank in case of a roll over. and we were talking about that the other day, the air pump, and the 5th and 6th ports..... the 5th and 6th ports work on presure not vacum from the air pump. kennedy i'm guessing the rb cat. has a fitting for a hose ???or a hardline,,,yeah thats right. Mel, remember the way my -SE was 'acting up' well,,,found it and i got it right. yea !!! BTW. where the hell did you go at 7stock ??? i looked all over for you before i left, to loan you some money for a 7stock t-shirt.. or i owe you money better yet . Then i thought, shit !. with the people you know there a shirt would have been no problem, i hope i was right ??????

sorry, my mistake, the rubber hose that hangs down is from the intake manifold, not the the air pump. thats what i get from looking from the bottom up. the haynes manual says there is a check valve in the pipe,at the point where it connects to the rubber hose. Next question, where is the actuator rods to work the ports? When looking from the passenger side down, there is a linkage attached to the manifold with a plunger going through a rubber boot, is this it?

Yes that is a check valve...its allows pumped air from the ACV to go one way to the catalysts and not let exhaust back up into it...12A cars work similar.

The only part of the actuator rods that are visible are the lever-like portion of it that are connected to the actuators themselves...the actual rods are inside the lower intake manifold.

i) The big rubber hose as you described is exactly what RacerX7fb explained. You can leave it open to the atmosphere if you want and it won't affect how the car runs.

ii) Your 5th and 6th ports (assuming you are stock) is operated off of the split air pipe from your cat. there is a metal tube near the firewall on the passenger side of the car (3/8" diameter).
that should have a connection to your split air pipe. (Check this.)

The actuators are attached to the lower intake manifold...there are 2 of them kinda sitting on a 45 degree angle. You can't really see the rods persay...as they extend into the manifold, but you can push down on the linkages and make sure they move. check the FSM online for pictures.
