Which Carb setup????

I have an 84 SE and going carb... I was wondering which carb setup everyone recomends for the 6port engine. RB's Holley kit is nice but way too much for a 600cfm carb!!! Would a 45DCOE be enough fuel? I like the weber setup but don't really want to use the stock lower manifold. What of an IDA on a street car? I really am open to all opinions and options. Thanks guys

IDA doesn't have a choke.

Weber 48DCOE would probably be the best option for you.

i thought about the weber wrap around intake kit from RB for my FB....any mods nessicary to get the thing on there? would i still have a choke?

Why dont you want to use your stock lower intake? Your 6 ports will still work, so you'll make more power than a one piece manifold.

A friend of mine wants to use a Predator. Anyone got any inout on that? I don't know if they would work on a rotor.

Wankelguy 12-09-03 08:31 PM

I saw a for sale ad for a rotary-powered sandrail that used a Predator carb, so evidently they can. I've often thought that the Predator's variable venturi design would lend itself to use on a rotary, but I had heard that there were problems getting them to work.

That's why I was thinking It would work good, they only dump what the vacumm calls for. What are the speacific mods for a rotary engine's carb? Is it just the OMP thing?
Hey Carl, You're the carb expert, What's you're take on this?

RRTEC 12-11-03 12:55 AM

Why do you need the choke? I have always run without them..... Is it possible to run an eldebrock carb...I have had good luck with them on my v8's (s10 blazer, s-10) but was thinking about ditching the holley for the eldebrock if it is possible....but seriously why the need for the choke?

red13brx7 12-11-03 07:32 AM

Well I have a holley on my six port and the thing runs great. I mean if you want to spend the money I think it is worth it. But make sure you have some experience or have some one to help you tune it. Its not hard.

red13brx7 12-11-03 10:47 AM

Oh yea, the 600 isn't to big for a 6-port just get it tuned right. And make the secondaries mechanical and you have low end power, what everybody complains about. And you have lots of high end power, it seems that the motor wants to pull forever.

Waiting for Carl to chime in...

 expert? Hardly, but I did stay at a Holiday inn last night. :D The predator looks interesting, not sure what it might need to work right on a rotary. Its basically a single barrel carb so Id imagine an open plenum spacer, then a dual plane spacer would be needed. But thats just a guess.

brianw 12-11-03 11:14 AM

wouldn't it take the same thing as on an ordinary Intake. Most of them are dual Plane. mY question is, Are there any mods specific to the rotor, Any speacial needs, vacuum,ect..? I know I would have to premix and eliminate the OMP. Right?

Rx7carl 12-11-03 11:43 AM

Nah do the OMP like RB does. Drill into teh manifold and put the tubes in there. :D

Thats what I dont know about predator carbs. What kind of vacuum signal are they setup for? And is that adjustable/tuneable?

Predator's variable venturi design permits air flow capabilities up to 930 cfm. Its ultra-simple design works strictly off air demand of the engine (and meters fuel in a direct relationship to that demand). Provides excellent off idle response and torque as well as providing very smooth power band characteristics. Slotted bolt hole mounting base will fit almost any four barrel intake including spreadbore patterns. Comes complete with an air filter adapter, installation hardwate, fuel line adapter, two optional metering cam profiles and a height gauge.

Does that help any Carl? Looking agian at the price i will proabaly buy one of you'rs. I plan on a streetport. Will you'rs be enough?

XLR8 12-12-03 05:16 PM

Is the RB carb worth it? for $860 I can almost buy a Haltech!! What does RB do to their Holleys that is so special? Could I use a stock Holley, or would I be better off getting their overpriced one:)

My friend has a 45DCOE on his 12a. Would it be enough fuel for a stock port 13b? I think Mazdtrixs kit is a 45 for 13bs

I know what ya mean about whipping up on 5.0's. I am confident that with my header, duels, and a carb I will be doing the same. The thing is running like a raped ape with the EFI and nothing but a MSD. But I just can't get it to idle or run smooth. Carb is simple:)

hornbm 12-12-03 06:09 PM

Dude, go weber. It gives you more power than the holley except for above 7500 RPM. Thats more USEABLE horsepower. Also a weber 45 DCOE is to small for a 13b, you need a weber 48 DCOE. Give rob a call at rotary shack, and he can set you up with a sick weber setup. http://www.rotaryshack.com

Rx7carl 12-12-03 06:40 PM

Brian, you already answered your own question. For what they cost, are they worth it even if they are as good as they say? Yes, my banana carb will support a SP, just need to finish spec'ing the jetting.

brianw 12-12-03 10:30 PM

Sweet. Thanks agian Carl. It will be a while though as I think the carb should come after ignition to burn it and exhaust to get rid of it. But it WILL come and it'll be a banana carb. Will you paint it yellow for me :hahaha:

EDIT: Carl this would be a good one for the new FAQ
