carb question
 

ok so my " new " 85 GS runs pretty good now, except for the exhaust leak, being rich and stumbling at about 1300 - 2k rpms. now as for the exhaust leak and the stumbling im not too concerned right now. what i am more concerned with is the richness of the carb.

i COULD go and adjust the mixture screw, but it still has the anti tamper cap on it. the carb gaskets show signs of a rebuild, but my question was this :

do i have to re-adjust the carb after a rebuild? i would kind of like to keep the cap on there (havent seen too many that are still on the carb), but at the same time i will sacrifice it to make it run better.

specs are 1985 GS 12a, k&n filter, new vac lines, new shutter valve, new clutch, new brakes, and the quietest exhaust i have ever heard. thanks in advance for the help.

check your fuel pressure and what kind of carb is it. fuel pressure should be at 3-4 lbs. your jets could be to big to.

oops my bad its a stock nikki carb and the emissions are the CA version if that helps. some of the stuff under there is a little different than fed emissions. fuel pressure is at about 3.6 and fluctuates to 3.8 at times.

What makes you believe that it is running rich?

it smells horrible....and i do mean horrible. also it is eatin ggas like a muther......

If you have not already I recommend downloading a copy of the Factory Carburetor manual and checking float levels and perform the appropriate tests that relate to your symptoms. Adjusting the carb is the last step if actually needed. There is usually another issue that is causing the initial problem.

Also pull your plugs and inspect them.

Do you have any power loss? Have you verified that you have spark to the leading plugs?

Have you inspected the secondary linkage (search using the terms teeter totter)
is attached?

plugs are new ( about 2 months of sitting after fresh install)

definately getting spark on both leading and trailing

float levels are fine. halfway up the windows

return line check valve has been replaced as well as the fuel filter
