Carb question.
 

I am trying to get my 85 on the road. It ran fine, but it wasn't getting enough gas into the carb. It was a float problem. That's good now, but I'm flooding when trying to start. The carb isn't getting too much gas. The gas level is actually below half on the sight glass. Sorry, I don't know my fuel pressure, in case you want to ask.

I had weak spark and got new NGK's and a new Leading coil. Put a different(not new) cap and rotor on. They looked way better than mine. Wires are on order and I'll get another coil for trailing after payday. Spark is already much stronger though.

What meters how much gas goes into the carb while cranking?
Can you think of anything else I may have done incorrectly during rebuild?
What are some good base settings I should try on air/fuel screw, idle screw, and the adjustment on the acceleration pump linkage?

my question is how do u know it's flooding? u pull the plugs and they're soaked with gas?

Yup. Smells like gas and plugs are drenched. I blow them out with air, and unflodd engine. Then I reassemble, flood, remove plugs...... lol.

You know, that's what mine does, too. Of course, I think it could be a blown apex seal/blown side seal that keeps mine from starting. Not really sure, since I bought it like that a month or so ago, just saving up for a rebuild (if it needs it.)

I would also like to know if there's a way to get the engine to stop flooding. That might be the problem with mine not starting.

P.S. Does anyone know how a rotary with good apex/side seals will sound when you pull the leading plugs out and spin it over? In the "No Start" thread I read, it was indicating that *perhaps* it could be apex/side seals that have been blown. Is this a definite indicator?

Check your carb needle and seat. That was my problem on a sidedraft. Was drenching my K&N and I didn't know it. Would think same possible on a vertical carb, too.

That's not it. That would fill the bowl(s) right? Thanx though.

Moonchopper..I was just messing with ya. I have seen some people get pretty bent outta shape for it though!

OK I'm getting the plug wires today. Hopefully they look good, performance wise. Anything else to check before I start losing my mind in carb re-rebuild land?

I had so called new plugs (less than 1500 mi on them) but replaced them and put new wires, cap and rotor on my badly flodding motor and it cranks on first try now. seems like once my plugs fouled out they were gonners....but needed the other stuff too.....

Donna.. Thanx for the post. I hope my situation turns out the same. I'll get new plugs too to see. Couldn't go today. Getting ready to run from the hurricane.

Latin270...I was told that they should be half full at idle, but haven't ever seen anything saying other times to check them.

Ok, I'm back from running from the hurricane. No bad damage to the 7!! Not like that was my main concern, but there was nothing around the house that was too bad. Got my plugs and wires today. Wife was a little concerned that I went straight to the parts store after getting into town. 8)
