Carb Float stuck on '83 GSL

The float(s) appear to be stuck. When you turn the key on you can hear the fuel pump. If you then look down the throat of the carbs they are full almost with gas, at least an inch. Can I hit the carbs like I used to on Chevy's and get them unstuck, and how hard is it to get the floats out? I suppose it's a stuck needle valve. It looked like the top comes off the carbs, do I even need to remove the carb to get at the floats? Thanks for comments!

I have done this with a pretty good success rate, but BE CAREFUL!

Don't know. I have always removed the carb, there are so many things attached that it seems easier to me to remove it.

You do not need to remove the top of the carb unless you have a tendancy to be clumsey (dropping things). you just need to pay close attention to where everything goes and how you take it apart so you can get it back together. also a medium whack on the top will usually help unstick the floats, just not too hard.

peejay always suggested a whap on the top with a mallet. not hard enough to crack anything. personally if you were going to the trouble of pulling it apart, i would just kit a rebuild kit and pull it. clean the thing off, soak it in carb cleaner, compress air the holes, and reinstall.
