car wont start after messing with carb
 
I just recently took the top cover off of the carb to work on my 83 rx7. I put everything on the carb back the way it was supposed to go and triple checked everything. now my car will not start and there is no fuel coming into the carb. I also noticed that my fuel pump is whining very loudly. normally i would just say its a bad fuel pump but i did not even touch the fuel pump or anything near it. all i did was take the air horn cover off and then put it back on. Any help would be greatly appreciated:(

Did you accidentally cross the lines? The fuel return line has a check valve in it, which could cause you fuel starvation issue.

Good suggestion ^^^

Check the fuel levels in the float bowls. You should see them about halfway full through each sight glass. A mirror helps with checking the rear one.

When you pulled the air horn off, did you lift it straight up? Gotta be careful because if you pull it off kinda sideways, you can bend the tabs on the floats and your levels will never be right again.

oh no i didnt know you couldnt take it off sideways. i only took one line off so I couldnt have crossed them. could a bent tab be keeping my car from starting?

could your floats have gotten messed with. they could be stuck up and not allowing fuel to fill the bowls?

update
 
i took the top cover back off the right way and I couldnt see any damage on the floats. I also checked that the fuel chambers are halfway full and they were. I put everything back together and I managed to start it with the choke fully on. It ran for a few minutes and then died. i tried restarting it but it will only stay started for about ten seconds and then die. If i start it and try to give it some gas it immediately dies and it will not start at all unless the choke is fully on. Im stumped here could anyone think what it could be? :scratch:

They shouldn't be half-way full with the cover off and floats out; the floats fill up most of the bowl volume. Supposed to be halfway full when the floats are floating in there.

they were halfway full with the floats in and the cover on sorry i should have specified that. i am getting fuel to the carb the fuel is just not coming into the barrels.

Did you mess with the throttle cable at all? Any chance it is hooked up wrong? Have you tried working the linkage by hand, and if so, does fuel shoot into the carb?

Other than that, I'd be checking vacuum lines.

I tried working the linkage by hand and no fuel is coming in at all. Ive double checked all the vacuum lines and compared them to the lines in my haynes manual so im 99% sure they are all correct. The fuel is coming in to the carb and it is coming into the float chambers, but it is not making it into the barrels.

It started
 
I GOT IT STARTED :) I took the cover back off and my primary float was slightly bent so that it was sticking up. I bent it back and turned the key on and fuel started spraying in the chamber. I put everything back together and it started with the choke on. I let it warm up and readjusted the idle and the mixture and it is purring like a rotary kitten now. First time i have ever broken and then fixed a carburetor:lol: thank you all for the help!

thank you im still having a couple problems but nothing major. i cannot get the idle to go below 1000 rpm and the secondaries seem to be opening late but im not 100% sure on that one. I think it going to be time for a rebuild soon. Also the accelerator pedal seems a tad firm, i adjusted the cable but it still seems firmer than usual

Check the "teeter totter". Search that term if you don't know what I'm talking about...

High idle that won't go down usually means a vacuum leak somewhere. Bad vac line, or such.

I just checked the teeter totter and it was not hooked up I was very surprised at how many people have had this problem besides me haha

coasting valve problem, it must be nikkis time of the month
 
yet ANOTHER probelm it seems that nikki isnt very fond of me today. My coasting valve diaphragm is ripped and when it is unplugged it makes a AWFUL noise. I normally just plug it up but since i got all the vacuum lines back where they are supposed to go and fixed the teeter totter when I plug it up now the car just idles really rough for a few seconds and then dies. I believe the shutter valve may be sticking closed but im not sure :scratch:
