Car wont run right

Ok so this is my first thread I have made glad to be a part of the community and many thanks to all that will help me out.....

Ok so my car was running perfectly fine I did a soft rebuild about 1100 miles ago and no issues till I was sitting in a parking spot (fuming mad might I add):and went to back out of the spot and did so a little roughly and the car bounced and when I stopped to go into 1st gear the car stumbled and died so I finally got it to start and limped it to my friends house and changed an expected fuel filter (was half full of rust so I knew it was bad) and changed filter and car still acted as if it wasn't getting fuel so I limped it home about 12 miles and anything under 3300 rpm it would stumble and act like no gas so I got it home and in the next few days I replaced many many items I added a Holley blue pump with an FPR and then I thought maybe alternator for some reason and had it tested and did fail some of the tests so I replace it I replaced all fuel lines and even took carb apart and cleaned it now car will only run at high rpm and won't idle and at low rpm it acts as if its starving for fuel please someone help II have coils tested and both tested fine had battery checked and its fine I replaced cap and bug and wires as well I forgot to mention them

Have you checked for vacuum leaks ? Also what carb are you using and what psi Is the fpr set at?

Jmolina0163 09-22-15 11:16 PM

Sorry forgot to mention I do have a rats best delete and its stock Nikki on a 12a motor sorry forgot the important details and my FPR is set at 3psi I have tried every setting from about 1 psi all the way up to 4 and nothing changes it

What FPR did you use? Please don't say Mr Gasket dial-a-psi setting kind.

So many places for failure here, where to start. First clean up your tank and fix the rust issues. The
filter will catch big peices but the rest is in your carb clogging your idle circuit it sounds like. So you
probably need to do a full disassemble, clean and then rebuild on the carb. Then very your fuel flow
to the carb. See where some of that gets you.

Early in the morning, I didn't fully process your post, and offered a solution to a different problem. That said, vacuum leak sounds likely. I also think you should drop and clean your gas tank. Given the state of your fuel filter, failure to clean the tank will cause nagging problems forever. The pickup itself will be clogged almost to the point of closure, and the strainer is disintegrated.
Just saw Tim's post. A good idea. When I first rebuilt mine without attending to the tank, I ended up taking the carb apart again and just spraying gumout with the straw through every orifice. It cured my similar low rpm issue, which involved transition circuit, apparently.

Ok I have been contemplating disassemble and rebuild carb again I did clean tank when I bought the car back in February and just never changed filter (idiotic I know I wasn't thinking about anything but BRAP BRAP) and it is the crappy aforementioned Mr gasket FPR that was only choice in budget at the time but will pull carb today and see what I can find out

Jmolina0163 09-23-15 09:44 AM

And did wonder what are the "valves" by the original fuel pump for and can I bypass all that and run direct from tank to pump or is all that stuff still necessary

Throw that FPR in the trash or return it. They do not work, at all. Get the holley FPR or better and a decent gauge to set it by.

The only valve I can think of is mounted to the floor of the hatch area and has the vent
line running through it. Its a safety thing to prevent gas coming out the vent line in
case of an overturn. You can bypass it with no issues.

Ok so after some fiddling and cleaning the car will run now I also ad a slight duh moment when I remembered I had set my carb to run on a weak pump prior to the Holley blue so I adjusted carb ane cleaned carb and car will start now but.... Now lines are leaking around banjo washers so I am gonna go buy some new ones and unfortunately I can't return the FPR I have had it for a few weeks and don't have the package its no big deal I have a friend gonna loan me a holley FPR today so gonna test it and see what I come up with will keep everyone posted as to what happens thanks guys so much

Ok so I have car running now and it was purring like a kitten and all the sudden started blowing water from the radiator cap and the over flow and car got really hot really fast and now I am not sure what's wrong

KansasCityREPU 09-23-15 04:38 PM

Does the exhaust blow clouds of smoke/vapor?

If not, check the t-state and water pump. Just for good measure, might as well replace them both.

Until you resolve the overheating issue, DO NOT DRIVE IT. You will kill the engine.

Jmolina0163 09-24-15 06:53 AM

Lol I have slowly been redoing the car and I figured out it was bad radiator cap I put a new one on and drove it and ran good no heat but now its acting up again and not running right its shaking really hard it may be time for a full rebuild idk I will have to wait till the weekend to fiddle more thanks guys for all the pointers and I'll get back to the thread on what was problem when I figure it out

sandy_RE 09-24-15 07:30 AM

have you put in fresh spark plugs to see if it helps??

my nikki 4 barrel 12a started shaking and missing on idle when the lower intake manifold started to leak...or maybe your carb is full of gunk from all that rust.

KansasCityREPU 09-24-15 12:00 PM

Can you use proper sentence structure and punctuation? I just went back through all your posts in this thread and not a single period or punctuation. It really helps us to understand your thoughts.

Jmolina0163 09-24-15 08:30 PM

^^^^ that being said, I'm out never knew I was in an English class. Thanks everyone for help and I will no longer bother the people of this forum.

KansasCityREPU 09-24-15 09:29 PM

Not trying to push you away. Just some friendly advise from an old guy.
