Car pulls when I accelerate & idle problems

I got my new Header on (Monza Pacesetter armor-coated header), and had the exhaust completed. I also got my carb rebuilt and reinstalled. Now the problems:

There is a pipe that is broken just in front of the rear passenger wheel. When I accelerate, it feels like the car is trying to pull sideways. It sucks.

Also, my car won't idle. If I let off the gas, it dies every time. I have to use starting fluid to get it started. I think maybe it is running lean? I adjusted the mixture screw down low on the driver-side of the carb all the way in, and then the standard 3 1/2 turns out. I don't believe my choke linkage is on tightening correctly. Also the mixture screw on the inside top of the carb I have experimented with to no avail.

Also, when going down the road, my car starts losing power, and I had to pull it over and turn it off for a few minutes. The I managed to get it to start up and drive better. I found that when I am driving that when my REX starts sputtering and slowing down/losing power, I can turn the ignition off and on again quickly while driving, and it then will drive better for a while.

I kno this last problem isn't the cats or the rats nest, because those are all gone. Could it be the fuel pump on this last problem? I also replaced my fuel filter this morning, the old one had a bunch of shit in it. Or could this problem be some part of the ignition system?!?

HELP, this is my daily driver, and it is getting me down.

Thanks All,

Joe in KC

edit: I should learn to read better. If the pipe is in front of the rear wheel, it can't be a trailing arm. Whoops.

Carry on.

pipe in front of the wheel? broken suspension?

as for the idle low power problem, i'd say you aren't getting fuel. have you changed the fuel filter? also have you tried to tune the carb? i can't remember what all the 85 has to adjust so i'm sure someone will jump on here with that.

also are you sure that you capped everything and don't have a vacuum leak.

Have you driven it much since you changed the fuel filter? Usually it will take a few minutes for the crap to clear up and to run perfectly if the fuel filter's been causing the trouble.

You can roughly test the fuel pump by pulling the supply line to the carb, dump it into a metered container and measure the output over a minute. Exact measure is in the Haynes manual.

Are *positive* that you have capped off / connected all of the vacuum lines properly? A vacuum leak in the right place can cause difficult/rough idle, rough running, etc.

I think a thorough check-over of the carb install is in order...

Jeremy: Must be broken suspension. Is that something I can replace/fix myself? I did change the fuel filter. It needed it. I did the carb right. I have double and triple checked everything with the carb. It is spotless clean and a new rebuild.

SilverRocket: I let it run at 2200 RPMs for about 10 minutes. After I let off the gas; it died again. I may just replace the fuel pump myself if they aren't sky-high expensive, and if the job is not too difficult. I am positive that I capped off all of the vacuum lines. I used RX-7Carl's Rats nets Removal Tutorial, and proceeded with much care and precision.

I am very confused about the ignition possibilities. Is there anyone here who is an ignition systems guru?

Ack. Its probably some ignitions bullshit AND a bad fuel pump. LOL

Since you have an 85, the factory manual is available to you in electronic format at www.iluvmyrx7.com . You should dl that, as it is an invaluable resource.
