car bogs in initial acceleration

82 with a 12A. I searched but didn't find my answer. My carb bogs out during initial acceleration in 1st gear. I figure it might be the AP but I had trouble adjusting it. My fuel filter is fine, I don't know if my AP is working right, ill have a friend go down and check to see if its spraying into the carb when I gas it. Any other suggestions? I want this thing tuned for perfection while I'm still broke, then possibly a carb swap when I get money. Maybe yaw or weber...

jays83gsl 05-13-05 01:43 AM

Just go with FI :D

IanS 05-13-05 07:51 AM

The way I adjusted my AP was with car off, just make sure it starts to move at the same time the throttle starts opening up. I believe unscrewng the adjust opens it sooner. Hope you get it figured out, and NEVER under ANY circumstance listen to JJ. He is trouble....

tougeFB 05-13-05 08:29 AM

I already knew this. I'm an old member to this forum, reborn. I will look for this AP screw u speak of. The chapter in my haynes of rebuilding my carb is falling apart. Some pages are gone. Anyway I need to make adjustments to my car since I've been here due to change in altitude as well but never have

your problem is the muffler bearings are worn out. replace the muffler bearings and check the flux capacitor. that should do it.

tougeFB 05-13-05 03:21 PM

Wtf? Damnit is any1 of help on this forum? Jesus

haha that's my kinda answer!

Ok seriously touge don't freak. Help is on its way. Symptoms do point to an unadjusted or defective ap. When you have your friend check if there is fuel going down the primaries on acceleration, also have him check for the ap leaking fuel. The diaphragm tends to get hard and break over the years.

Kentetsu 05-13-05 03:31 PM

LOL. Kids these days......

Remove the cover from the air filter, and operate the AP linkage by hand. You should see a healthy shot of fuel come out of both of the nozzles. Keep in mind that this will only work a couple of times before the bowl is drained, then you will need to restart the car to refill the bowls prior to further testing.

If this is not clear enough, let me know and I will explain further...:)

AP? Automatic....... ????

tougeFB 05-14-05 02:46 AM

There is a good amt. of fuel going into the venturis when throttle is applied. Seems fine. How can you tell if accelerator pump diaphragm is no longer spongy? I tried taking it apart once, but seeing how its my daily driver that was a bad first time idea... Now I have pretty good initial acceleration BUT now that I messed with the carb, when I revved it to 7k or so it started to sputter. I can't tell if its leaning out or dumping too much fuel in. I haven't checked the fuel filter under the car for 3 weeks or so. Maybe I should...

U guys don't need to tell me to calm down. I'm not a noob, just on this forum. I don't appreciate smart ass comments is all. I have learned a bunch on this forum searching and reading but when I read that it just pissed me off. Sorry. I just want my carb running right...

Sputter at 7k rpm: running out of gas, check fuel filter, fuel lines, fuel pump.

tougeFB 05-14-05 03:40 PM

How do I check the fuel pump? Is that in the haynes?

jays83gsl 05-14-05 10:47 PM

It involves taking off the hoses from the carb (the ones that give it fuel) and checking how much fuel goes into a bucket how fast. That will check your volume and whatnot that it's putting out.

Noob ;)

:rlaugh: BWAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh what, Cap'n Carlos the carb expert's on his way?!:rlaugh:

Man I tell ya. That's why I'm hardly ever around here anymore.
Some poor guy just wants some advice and he's met either with wing-nut post whores who can't contribute anything worthwhile, or with fat-headed guru wannabes that often give bum advice because it's better than giving no advice in order to keep up their facade.
Then he's met by even more assholes when he expresses frustration at the lack of help!

There's only a handful of people who really know their shit here, and you Carlos, are not one of them. So stop talking down to people like you are.
You probably don't even realize you're doing it.

The article is written with mechanical secondaries in mind, but the tuning part it the same as stock.

Carlos stop talking to sterling like that. You know that he knows more about carbs than you ever will.
