A/C freon venting q's

I know you've gotta take it to an auto-refrigeration place, but, I think mine may have already been decharged, if I take off the two caps on the compressor and push down with a long wire (I'd like to be far away from any venting freon :p) I notice nothing comes out... Now the pump has been disconnected for a while, does it have to be turning over to function or does this basically mean my system is dry?

You need to pull a vacuum. Hook a vacuum pump and a vacuum gauge. let it run at least 30 minutes. turn off pump and note the reading on the vacuum gauge. It should be about 25-30 inches, depending on your altitude. Go to bed. Get up in the morning and look at the gauge. If it didn't move, you have no leaks and you can charge. If it is less you have a leak you need to fix.
If you charge without pulling a vacuum, the water vapor in the atmosphere inside the a/c system will turn into an acid and eat a hole in something.

Well, I don't plan on charging, I plan on removing :)
