buying rx7 - questions
hi im about to buy my first rx7 its an 83 model and im just wondring what kind of things are u supposed to do to a rotary to make it last as long as possible, i need to get hold of a manual somewhere/somehow. from what ive seen so far you are supposed to put non synthetic 2 stroke oil, and even put some in the fuel tank when u fill up, any info??
i didnt wanna make a new thread but im havin trouble findin what i wanna know. the 7 will be my first car so im not exactly up to scratch on anything at all, i dont even know what MMO stands for... being where i am in australia sucks too because basically the only place i can take it to get fixed is the mazda dealer - which will probably cost a shitload... im movin to a captal city next year so it should be good then thanks |
no no no.... normal non-synthetic 4-STROKE oil in the oil filler... NOT 2-stroke.... that would be very bad....
But yes, you can premix the gas with 2-stroke oil, as the Apex seals like all the lubrication they can get. There are TONS of threads on here that will tell you all about maintenance, what to look for when buying a 7, and all that great stuff.... the Search function will do you good ;) |
check out www.mazdatrix.com they have a really good facts section that tells you what kind of lubricants to use.
if you're in a warm environment, use Castrol GTX 20 W50 cold environment? 10 W 30 when you get it, change the: oil, filter fuel filter check the fluid in the tranny, rear diff- top off as necessary Those are the most important things- other things to think of: Brake fluid flush (if dark colored) - should be clear After you do all of the general maint- do a search on electric fans, emissions removal etc. |
Another good thing to is have the Rad Flused and the Fluid Changed.
Like the other guys have said just try and make your own history for the car. Changing the spark plugs is a good one also. However the plugs are exspencive (compared to most). But don't go with a substiute plug use the NGKs. Other plugs may go too deep into the housing and cause hideous damage to the Apex seals on the the rotors. Otherwise, welcome to the forum, and enjoy one of the finest sports cars ever made :) |
The biggest mistake that I have made so far as a relatively new 7 owner was taking it to the Mazda dealer. They have no interest in 20 year old cars and they seem to have an especially bad attitude about rotary engines. Much better to take the time to learn to do it yourself!

Some people are just lame.
That last post of mine got all screwed up thanks to my stupid computer :grrrr: Any way I think people need to take the mazda dealer as they find them. The one I deal with is pritty decent. They have a guy with rotory exsperiece, and there parts guy is very knolagable on 7s. Plus theire hourly rate is good too (in comparison to other shops in my area) But as far as what they want for their cars they are COMPLETELY OUT TO LUNCH!! So take them as you find them just keep your eyes open. |
hey who knows....now with the new rx-8 at the dealers, hopefully they'll bring in a new line of rotary mechanics that could work on our cars :)

when you walk into the local mazda dealer here, right on the door to the service dept. is a sign that says "We do not work on or rebuild rotary engine vehicles."

thanks for the help fella, i was just spinnin pretty bad cause theres so much different shit u read on the net and since my 7 hasnt got a manual with it its kinda hard, the mazda people in my town are mostly cockheads but theres one lad theres whos really helpful and got alot of experience. theres about one other place in town thats got alot of exp. with rotaries but thats about it.
after i change some of the basic things like yous mentioned im definitely goin to get the dash relined cause its got a hell of a lot of damage on it - for now its covered my a mat, but the dash dosent look too brilliant anyway. |
